Waarde Duyvendak,
Zoals je, naar ik hoop, bekend was, kon ik de vergadering van l.l. Dinsdag niet bijwonen. Ik stel het wel op prijs om mijn voorlopige indruk van de ontwerp-brief aan de Raad van Bestuur aan je kenbaar te maken. De koerswijziging, die men hierin voorstelt, gaat mij wel wat ver. Uiteraard kan ik slechts voor mijn eigen vak spreken, maar ten aanzien daarvan zou ik toch wel willen stellen, dat ik het tot mijn verantwoordelijkheid reken op de hoogte te blijven wat daaraan op internationaal niveau gedaan wordt. Ik kan mij bijna niet anders voorstellen dan dat dit met de meeste mijner collega's evenzo staat. Vandaar dat ik mij afvraag of het inderdaad nodig is nu eerst enige jaren zelf te gaan studeren alvorens de eigenlijke activiteit van het Instituut wordt voortgezet (zo althans heb ik begrepen dat de strekking van de brief moet worden verstaan). Mocht ik mij nodeloos zorgen maken over de omvang van de koerswijziging, dan zal dat wel duidelijk worden in de volgende docentenvergadering. Mocht ik de voorgenomen koerswijziging echter goed begrepen hebben, dan zou ik het wel op prijs stellen daarvan op de docentenvergadering blijk te geven. Dat ik je van tevoren schrijf is hoofdzakelijk om te voorkomen dat ik door misverstand verwarring sticht.

Dear Duyvendak,
As I hope you were aware, I was unable to attend the meeting last Tuesday. I do appreciate being able to make my preliminary impression of the draft letter to the Board of Directors known to you. The change of course proposed therein goes a bit far for me. Naturally, I can only speak for my own field, but in that regard, I would still like to state that I consider it my responsibility to stay informed about what is being done in that area at an international level. I can hardly imagine otherwise than that this is the same for most of my colleagues. Hence, I wonder if it is indeed necessary to first spend a few years studying oneself before the actual activity of the Institute is continued (at least that is how I understood the thrust of the letter is to be taken). Should I be needlessly worrying about the extent of the change of course, then that will become clear in the next faculty meeting. However, should I have understood the proposed change of course correctly, then I would appreciate it if that were made evident at the faculty meeting. The fact that I am writing to you in advance is mainly to prevent me from causing confusion through a misunderstanding.
