Ondergetekenden, leden van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Academie van Wetenschappen, afdeling Letterkunde, bevelen gaarne als buitenlands lid der Academie aan de heer dr Ragnar Frisch.
Dr Frisch, geboren in 1895, is sinds 1931 hoogleraar in de Economie aan de Universiteit te Oslo; tevens is hij lid van de Noorse Academie van Wetenschappen. Hij speelt een leidende rol in de zg. econometrie, d.i. de gecombineerde beoefening van wiskundige economie en statistische toetsing van theorieën aan waargenomen verschijnselen, gewoonlijk op grondslag van mathematisch-statistische methoden. Hij heeft een reeks in hoge mate originele publicaties op dit terrein het licht doen zien, waarvan er hieronder enkele genoemd zijn. Hij behoorde tot de oprichters in 1930 van de "Econometric Society", de internationale organisatie van de beoefenaars van de econometrie. Van het wetenschappelijke tijdschrift, uitgegeven door deze vereniging, is hij sinds 1933 redacteur. Zijn werk heeft in hoge mate stimulerend gewerkt en o.m. geleid tot de oprichting van het centrum tot beoefening dezer tak van economisch onderzoek in Chicago, de zg. Cowles Commission, alwaar van 10 - 20 gequalificeerde onderzoekers permanent arbeid vinden.
Bekend zijn zijn onderzoeken tot meting van de flexibiliteit van de grensnuttigheid van het inkomen (New Methods of Measuring Marginal Utility, Tübingen, 1932. Beiträge zur ökonomischen Theorie, Vol.3).
Voorts zijn bekend: Pitfalls in the Statistical Construction of Demand and Supply Curves, Leipzig, 1933 (Veröffentlichungen der Frankfurter Gesellschaft für Konjunkturforschung, n.F., Vol.5).

Het laatste boek beweegt zich geheel en al op het terrein van de statistische methoden in gebruik bij de verificatie van economische theorieën.
Professor Frisch is de laatste jaren ook lid van de sub-commissie voor "Employment and Economic Stability", ressorterende onder de Economische en Sociale Raad van de Verenigde Naties. In deze functie heeft hij zeer belangrijke bijdragen geleverd tot de constructie van de zg. "modellen" van het nationale en internationale economische leven, met name ter bestudering van maatregelen van handels-, betalings- en werkgelegenheidspolitiek. balans

The undersigned, members of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, Humanities Division, gladly recommend Dr. Ragnar Frisch as a foreign member of the Academy.
Dr. Frisch, born in 1895, has been a professor of Economics at the University of Oslo since 1931; he is also a member of the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters. He plays a leading role in so-called econometrics, i.e., the combined practice of mathematical economics and statistical testing of theories against observed phenomena, usually on the basis of mathematical-statistical methods. He has published a series of highly original publications in this field, some of which are mentioned below. He was among the founders in 1930 of the "Econometric Society", the international organization of practitioners of econometrics. He has been the editor of the scientific journal published by this association since 1933. His work has been highly stimulating and has led, among other things, to the establishment of the center for the practice of this branch of economic research in Chicago, the so-called Cowles Commission, where 10 - 20 qualified researchers find permanent work.
His research on measuring the flexibility of the marginal utility of income is well known (New Methods of Measuring Marginal Utility, Tübingen, 1932. Beiträge zur ökonomischen Theorie, Vol.3).
Also known are: Pitfalls in the Statistical Construction of Demand and Supply Curves, Leipzig, 1933 (Veröffentlichungen der Frankfurter Gesellschaft für Konjunkturforschung, n.S., Vol.5).

The latter book is entirely in the field of statistical methods used in the verification of economic theories.
In recent years, Professor Frisch has also been a member of the sub-commission for "Employment and Economic Stability", falling under the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations. In this capacity, he has made very important contributions to the construction of so-called "models" of national and international economic life, specifically for the study of measures of trade, balance of payments, and employment policy. balance
