De aandacht die U hebt willen geven aan mijn vorig schrijven betreffende de rijwielpaden, heeft mij moed gegeven Uw aandacht eveneens te vragen voor de kwestie van het sneeuwruimen, waar wij de laatste weken nogal wat mee te maken hebben gehad. De toestand van de straten in den Haag bij sneeuw laten nogal wat te wensen over. Voor zover ik mij herinner is het een financi#le kwestie, die de Gemeente er toe gebracht heeft de politiek te verlaten, die in mijn jongensjaren gebruikelijk was, waarbij legers sneeuwopruimers iets extra's verdienden. Mocht dit inderdaad financieel onmogelijk zijn, dan vraag ik mij af of verplichte medewerking van de burgers voor het gedeelte dat voor hun huis gelegen is, toch niet moet overwogen worden, hetzij wat betreft het werkelijk wegruimen van de sneeuw, hetzij wat betreft het strooien van zand of as. Ik meen begrepen te hebben dat het strooien van zout als te bezwaarlijk voor schoenen en banden wordt beschouwd. Gezien echter het aantal slachtoffers van de laatste weken - ernstige en minder ernstige - vraag ik mij toch af of dit standpunt houdbaar is.
Mocht een en ander niet onder Uw dienst ressorteren, dan zoudt U mij verplichten indien U mijn brief zoudt willen doorzenden. Het komt mij voor dat in elk geval enige voorlichting op dit terrein velen zal bevredigen.

The attention you were willing to give to my previous letter regarding the bicycle paths has given me the courage to also ask for your attention regarding the issue of snow removal, which we have had quite a bit to deal with in recent weeks. The condition of the streets in The Hague during snow leaves quite a bit to be desired. As far as I remember, it is a financial matter that led the Municipality to abandon the policy that was customary in my youth, where armies of snow clearers earned something extra. Should this indeed be financially impossible, I wonder whether mandatory cooperation from citizens for the section located in front of their house should not be considered, either regarding the actual removal of the snow or regarding the spreading of sand or ash. I believe I understood that the spreading of salt is considered too harmful for shoes and tires. However, given the number of victims in recent weeks - serious and less serious - I wonder whether this position is sustainable.
Should this matter not fall under your department, you would oblige me if you would forward my letter. It seems to me that in any case, some information in this area will satisfy many.
