Aan de heer drs. M.A. Jansen,
Office Européen des Nations Unies,
Palais des Nations,
Genève.
Amice,

Dear Tinbergen,
We have at the moment a vacancy in the Statistical Section, and, in spite of the fact that we have many candidates, we have not yet been able to fill this post.
I am writing to you because I think that the post is a very interesting one for a person with the right mentality, and I am wondering whether you might have a name to suggest. The post is described as that of a professional statistician at a junior level, his duties being "to perform as directed assignments in fields of economic or statistical research and analysis" and the qualifications required are "good or first-class honours degree in economics and/or statistics; at least two years practical experience in one or both of these fields, and demonstrated ability to carry out research work involving critical judgment". The person to fill this post would be responsible for the selection of sources, assembling statistical data from such sources, the establishment of estimates, etc. He would be called upon to draft notes on sources and methods and generally assist in the work of economic analysis carried out in the Division.
I should like to add that we are attempting to introduce a much greater degree of interchangeability of statistical posts and those more exclusively confined to economic analysis. For the post in question we are looking for a really good young man who will be able to participate in the work on our Surveys, etc.
We have been writing to other countries as well, and don't yet know whether the result of those letters will be successful. I am pretty sure, however, that if you could give us the name of a good candidate, this man would have a good chance of being considered for the job.
I should like you to consider this letter as personal, and not to mention it in other correspondence which you may have with other members of our Secretariat.
With best wishes,
Yours sincerely,
M. JANSEN
Professor J. Tinbergen, Sijzenlaan 41, THE HAGUE
