Dear Colleague Baade,

Thank you very much for your letter of October 24 and for the documents. I am therefore waiting for the answer from Mr. Wapenhans.
Regarding your further proposal, I must confess that I had only thought of a conference and not a working group. Because I already lead the United Nations Development Planning Committee, which also includes East European members, it would be somewhat confusing if I were now to also take over the leadership of such a working group.
I have already established direct contact with Mr. Pearson in this other capacity. Despite all this, a conference still seems very useful to me. It is difficult to get the official cooperation of the East. On the other hand, the Russian member has already declared his position.
Finally, as far as Myrdal is concerned, I am not sure that he really thinks so negatively. It is true that his book gives this impression, but that is only an impression. I would therefore like to let it depend on him whether he wants to collaborate or not.
Hopefully you agree with the idea of organizing a conference in the early summer with some East European colleagues.

Haben Sie recht herzlichen Dank für Ihren Brief vom 24. Oktober und für die Dokumente. Ich warte also auf die Antwort von Herrn Wapenhans.
Was Ihren weiteren Vorschlag anbetrifft, muss ich gestehen dass ich nur an einer Konferenz gedacht hatte und nicht an eine Arbeitsgemeinschaft. Weil ich nämlich schon die Leitung der United Nations Development Planning Committee habe worin auch Ost-europäische Mitglieder sitzen, wäre es etwas verwirrend wenn ich nun auch die Leitung einer solchen Arbeitsgemeinschaft übernehmen würde.
Einen direkten Kontakt mit Herrn Pearson habe ich schon hergestellt in dieser anderen Funktion. Bei alledem scheint mir eine Konferenz immerhin noch sehr nützlich. Es ist nämlich schwierig die Mitarbeit des Ostens offiziell zu bekommen. Dagegen hat sich schon das russische Mitglied erklärt.
Schliesslich was Myrdal anbetrifft, bin ich nicht sicher dass er wirklich so negativ denkt. Es ist schon richtig dass sein Buch diesen Eindruck macht, aber das ist nur ein Eindruck. Ich möchte es deshalb von ihm abhängen lassen ob er mitarbeiten will oder nicht.
Hoffentlich sind Sie einverstanden mit den Gedanken etwa im Vorsommer eine Konferenz zu organisieren mit einigen osteuropäischen Kollegen.
