Beste Leo,
Gisteren heb ik het gesprek gehad met de heer Oudendijk, de heer Meyer en mejuffrouw Van Oven over de laatste conjunctuurdocumentatie. Zoals uit bijgaand door hen opgesteld stuk blijkt, werd hun enthousiasme nogal getemperd door de vele voor hen onbegrijpelijke afwijkingen tussen tekst en grafieken. Ik geloof dat de meeste van deze afwijkingen hieruit zijn te verklaren, dat in de grafieken reële cijfers zijn gebruikt, terwijl in de tekst met nominale cijfers is gewerkt. Het komt mij voor dat zij wel wat gelijk hebben, dat dit voor hun directies een vrijwel onontwarbaar kluwen zou zijn. Ik zou dus willen vragen om, zoals ik heb afgesproken, bij wijze van oefening ditzelfde stuk nogeens te schrijven op een wijze als in hun rapport wordt voorgesteld. Daarin staat dan tegelijkertijd een belangrijk nieuw element, nl. het in de laatste regel van blz. 1 voorgestelde. Ik heb gezegd dat wij er voor voelden dit experiment uit te

voeren op de wijze zoals door ons l.l. Donderdag is besproken, doch dat wij in een later stadium dan wel eens de quaestie van de financiën aan de orde moesten stellen. Tevens heb ik gezegd dat ik de heer Louwes nog zou vragen in hoeverre wellicht nog misverstanden in bijgaand stuk zijn te constateren, maar het is wel duidelijk of dat een aanwijzing is dat aan duidelijkheid ons stuk nog belangrijk te wensen heeft overgelaten. Willen wij deze zaak in het goede spoor brengen (en de heer Oudendijk voelt daar nog steeds bepaaldelijk voor), dan zullen wij dus nog wel heel wat moeite aan deze verbetering moeten besteden. Daar jezelf voor deze zaak ook zeer enthousiast bent, hoop ik wel op je intensieve medewerking. Er is nog een andere slordigheid in het geheel, n.l. het ontbreken van een grafiek IV. Ook dit moet hersteld worden. Het lijkt als of er verwarring heeft plaats gevonden tussen de oude IV en de nieuwe VI.
Zou je tevens Leen er aan willen herinneren, dat er blijkbaar nog niets verzonden is omtrent de benzinemarkt? Het wordt nu toch wel tijd dat dit snel gebeurt. Er is nog steeds behoefte aan beter op tijd spelen dan wij blijkbaar op het ogenblik doen. Ik hoop volgende week Donderdag de zaak nog weer verder te bespreken, maar de verzending van de stukken over de benzinemarkt zou m.i. aanstonds moeten geschieden. Wij mogen deze relatie niet bederven!

Yesterday I had a conversation with Mr. Oudendijk, Mr. Meyer and Miss Van Oven about the latest business cycle documentation. As appears from the attached document prepared by them, their enthusiasm was somewhat dampened by the many deviations between text and graphs that were incomprehensible to them. I believe that most of these deviations can be explained by the fact that real figures were used in the graphs, while nominal figures were used in the text. It seems to me that they are somewhat right, that this would be an almost inextricable tangle for their managements. I would therefore like to ask, as I have agreed, by way of exercise to write this same piece again in a manner as proposed in their report. At the same time, it contains an important new element, namely the one proposed in the last line of page 1. I said that we felt like carrying out this experiment to

be performed in the manner discussed by us last Thursday, but that at a later stage we should raise the issue of finances. I also said that I would still ask Mr. Louwes to what extent misunderstandings can perhaps still be found in the attached document, but it is clear whether that is an indication that our document still leaves much to be desired in terms of clarity. If we want to get this matter on the right track (and Mr. Oudendijk still definitely feels like doing so), then we will have to put a lot of effort into this improvement. Since you yourself are also very enthusiastic about this matter, I hope for your intensive cooperation. There is another sloppiness in the whole, namely the absence of a graph IV. This must also be restored. It seems as if confusion has taken place between the old IV and the new VI.
Would you also like to remind Leen that apparently nothing has been sent yet regarding the gasoline market? It is about time that this happens quickly. There is still a need to play better on time than we apparently do at the moment. I hope to discuss the matter further next Thursday, but in my opinion the dispatch of the documents about the gasoline market should take place immediately. We must not spoil this relationship!
