Zeer geachte Heer Kist,
In antwoord op Uw brief van 3 Augustus moet ik U tot mijn spijt mededelen, dat er alle kans is dat ik vanaf October voor een aantal maanden niet in Nederland zal verblijven. In verband hiermede zal het mij ook niet mogelijk zijn de voordrachten in Uw brief genoemd te houden. Naar ik meen is deze situatie reeds eerder ingetreden en hebt U toen zeer goede sprekers van elders kunnen aantrekken. Ik hoop dat U dat deze keer ook mogelijk zal zijn.

Dear Mr. Kist,
In response to your letter of August 3, I must regretfully inform you that there is every chance that I will not be staying in the Netherlands for a number of months starting from October. In connection with this, it will also not be possible for me to give the lectures mentioned in your letter. As I recall, this situation has occurred before and you were then able to attract very good speakers from elsewhere. I hope that this will also be possible this time.
