Amice,
Je zult me langzamerhand van kwade trouw gaan verdenken, maar er is weer, zoals wij hier zeggen, een ernstige kink in de kabel wat betreft ons bezoek aan Antwerpen op 22 dezer. Wij hebben zojuist bericht ontvangen dat ons huisgenootje, Fietje Boissevain, die twee maanden naar haar ouders in Venezuela is geweest, terugkomt in de loop van de 22e en wij kunnen haar niet aan haar lot overlaten; wij zullen haar moeten gaan afhalen van het vliegveld en haar bij ons weer installeren. Overigens komt er bij, dat de spoorverbinding met Antwerpen, zoals je weet, eerst een of twee weken later weer hersteld zal zijn; de tegenwoordige verbinding is ongeveer een uur langer en daardoor voor een zo korte excursie wel bezwaarlijk.
Mijn vrouw en ik schamen ons dat deze nieuwe moeilijkheden tussenbeide komen, maar zouden het toch wel zeer bijzonder op prijs stellen als onze afspraak nog een keer mocht worden verzet. Wij zouden willen vragen of het je schikt, dat wij de eerste Zondag dat de verbinding weer hersteld is, en die jou schikt, zouden komen. Echter zou daarbij de 8e Maart moeten worden uitgezonderd, omdat ik dan naar Parijs moet. Voor zover ik de berichten heb gevolgd, denken de spoorwegen, dat over een maand ongeveer de verbinding weer hersteld is.

Dear friend,
You will gradually begin to suspect me of bad faith, but there is once again, as we say here, a serious hitch in the plan regarding our visit to Antwerp on the 22nd of this month. We have just received word that our housemate, Fietje Boissevain, who has been with her parents in Venezuela for two months, is returning during the course of the 22nd and we cannot leave her to her own devices; we will have to go pick her up from the airport and settle her back in with us. Furthermore, as you know, the rail connection to Antwerp will only be restored in one or two weeks; the current connection takes about an hour longer and is therefore quite problematic for such a short excursion.
My wife and I are ashamed that these new difficulties have intervened, but we would nevertheless very much appreciate it if our appointment could be rescheduled once more. We would like to ask if it suits you for us to come on the first Sunday that the connection is restored and that is convenient for you. However, March 8th would have to be excluded, as I have to go to Paris then. As far as I have followed the reports, the railways think that the connection will be restored in about a month.
