Zeer geachte Heer Bartels,
Uw manuscript heb ik doorgelezen en het lijkt mij goed, dat ik de opmerkingen die ik heb eerst even schriftelijk vastleg, alvorens wij een nader gesprek er over voeren. U kunt dan de zaak eerst eens even overdenken.
U hebt ongetwijfeld nu heel wat van de betrokken literatuur bekeken en daardoor de benodigde bouwstoffen bijeengebracht, maar de verwerking is toch niet zo geschied als naar mijn mening nodig is. Ik heb twee hoofdbezwaren: het ene is dat de beschouwingen niet voldoende logisch op elkaar aansluiten, het andere dat de statistische bewerkingen nog slechts zeer oppervlakkig zijn. Laat ik beide iets nader uitwerken. Om de stof op wetenschappelijk juiste wijze weer te geven moet zij meer gecoördineerd worden, d.w.z. er moet een logisch goed te verdedigen volgorde in de behandeling zijn en de onderverdeling moet daarvan duidelijk blijk geven. Bovendien moeten bijeenbehorende zaken tezamen geanalyseerd worden, hetgeen b.v. met de besproken literatuur over de multiplier niet het geval is.
Wat de statistische bewerking betreft hebt U U uitsluitend bepaald tot het bewerken van de absolute cijfers en niet, zoals naar ik meen reeds lang afgesproken was, ook berekeningen uitgevoerd met verschillen van jaar op jaar. Dit is m.n. voor de marginale consumptiequote noodzakelijk en zal vermoedelijk ook tot gevolg hebben dat de cijfers wat meer constant worden.
De volgende stap zal naar mijn mening niet moeten bestaan in een tekst, die naar de uiterlijke vorm reeds min of meer afgerond is, zoals U dat hebt nagestreefd. Het is beter dat U eerst een meer gedetailleerde "inhoudsopgave" van Uw boekje ontwerpt, b.v. in de vorm van titels van paragrafen, of nog beter zelfs korte samenvattingen van elk der paragrafen. Eerst daarna moeten wij werkelijk aan het schrijven gaan. U zult in de marge allerlei potloodopmerkingen vinden, die naar ik hoop een en ander nog wat zullen verduidelijken en ik zal gaarne binnenkort eens met U overleggen.
Zoals U uit deze aantekeningen eveneens zult zien, geloof ik wel dat de door U op blz. 69 vermelde stelling in het eindresultaat een plaats van enige betekenis kan innemen; maar daarbij zal dan toch zorgvuldiger onderscheid

gemaakt moeten worden tussen de relaties, die naar Uw eigen voorafgaande tekst monetair zijn en degene die quantitatief zijn.
Tenslotte is er van onze oorspronkelijke afspraak om de rol van de prijsbeweging afzonderlijk te onderzoeken, wel zeer weinig overgebleven. Ook daarover zou nog wel nader gestudeerd moeten worden, zelfs voordat U de "inhoudsopgave" ontwerpt.
Een en ander zal U wellicht nogal tegenvallen, maar is bij het ontwerpen van een dissertatie niet ongebruikelijk. U zult trouwens bemerken dat, wanneer men de zaak voor de tweede keer bekijkt, veel verbanden alweer duidelijker uit de verf komen.

Dear Mr. Bartels,
I have read through your manuscript and it seems good to me that I first record the comments I have in writing before we have a further discussion about it. You can then think the matter over for a moment first.
You have undoubtedly looked at quite a bit of the relevant literature by now and thereby gathered the necessary building blocks, but the processing has not yet happened as is necessary in my opinion. I have two main objections: one is that the considerations do not connect logically enough with each other, the other is that the statistical treatments are still only very superficial. Let me elaborate on both a bit further. To present the material in a scientifically correct manner, it must be more coordinated, i.e., there must be a logically well-defensible order in the treatment and the subdivision must clearly show this. Moreover, related matters must be analyzed together, which for example is not the case with the discussed literature on the multiplier.
Regarding the statistical processing, you have limited yourself exclusively to processing the absolute figures and not, as I believe was agreed upon long ago, also performed calculations with year-to-year differences. This is particularly necessary for the marginal consumption quota and will presumably also result in the figures becoming somewhat more constant.
The next step, in my opinion, should not consist of a text that is already more or less finalized in its outward form, as you have aimed for. It is better that you first design a more detailed "table of contents" for your booklet, e.g., in the form of titles of paragraphs, or even better, short summaries of each of the paragraphs. Only after that should we really start writing. You will find all sorts of pencil notes in the margin, which I hope will clarify things a bit more, and I would be happy to consult with you soon.
As you will also see from these notes, I do believe that the proposition mentioned by you on page 69 can take a place of some significance in the final result; but in doing so, a more careful distinction

must be made between the relations that, according to your own preceding text, are monetary and those that are quantitative.
Finally, very little remains of our original agreement to investigate the role of price movement separately. This should also be studied further, even before you design the "table of contents".
This may all be quite disappointing to you, but it is not unusual when designing a dissertation. You will notice, by the way, that when one looks at the matter for a second time, many connections become clearer again.
