Zeer geachte Heer Roelofs,
Ik heb volle sympathie voor Uw brief en het was niet zonder een zekere verwachting in deze richting dat ik U schreef. Zelf ben ik intussen tot een andere conclusie gekomen, maar dat doet niet ter zake. Het spreekt vanzelf dat wanneer U mij in het Nederlands een indruk kunt geven van wat naar Uw mening het nieuwe is, ik over de inhoud van het artikel graag een oordeel wil trachten te geven. Ik bedoel dus eigenlijk niet een letterlijke vertaling in het Nederlands, maar ongeveer het volgende: een probleemstelling, een vermelding van het resultaat en de vermelding van wat in Uw aanpak door U als nieuw wordt gepresenteerd. Dat laatste kan namelijk de schrijver het beste zeggen.

Dear Mr. Roelofs,
I have full sympathy for your letter and it was not without a certain expectation in this direction that I wrote to you. In the meantime, I myself have come to a different conclusion, but that is irrelevant. It goes without saying that if you can give me an impression in Dutch of what in your opinion is new, I would like to try to give an opinion on the content of the article. So I don't actually mean a literal translation into Dutch, but roughly the following: a problem statement, a mention of the result and the mention of what is presented as new by you in your approach. The latter is something the author can best say.
