Amice,
Neem mij niet kwalijk dat ik je met de volgende aangelegenheid kom lastig vallen !
In de VS, waar ik enige maanden college heb gegeven, ben ik in aanraking gekomen met de physicus Tom Benham, Professor of Physics at Haverford College, Haverford (Pa). Hij is gespecialiseerd op practische toepassingen van electronica. Ondanks het feit dat hij blind is, is hij een zeer gewaardeerde docent, die zich met een bewonderingswaardige energie door zijn moeilijkheden heen slaat. Met name heeft hij verschillende productieprocessen ontwikkeld, waardoor blinden toestellen kunnen construeren, die voor hunzelf van betekenis zijn. De heer Benham heeft behalve zijn blindheid het laatste jaar ook nog te kampen met een stijve knie door verkeerd operatief ingrijpen. Er schijnt een mogelijkheid voor hem te zijn dit beter te laten behandelen in Duitsland.
Ik vermeld dit alles, omdat mijn vraag kort en goed is: is er enige kans dat Benham als gasthoogleraar naar Europa gevraagd wordt? Ik richt deze vraag tot jou, omdat zij kennelijk slechts beantwoord kan worden door iemand, die zijn waarde als specialist kan beoordelen. Zou deze dusdanig beoordeeld worden, dat er een mogelijkheid is, dan neem ik aan, dat ik bij blindenorganisaties veel belangstelling zal vinden om hem ook in deze richting te laten optreden. Mocht je mezelf niet op mijn vraag kunnen antwoorden, maar mij kunnen verwijzen naar de deskundige, die het dichtst in de buurt van Benham's werk actief is, dan zou ik daarvoor ook zeer dankbaar zijn, evenals voor elke andere hint die in dit geval nuttig zou kunnen zijn.

Please forgive me for bothering you with the following matter!
In the US, where I have been lecturing for several months, I came into contact with the physicist Tom Benham, Professor of Physics at Haverford College, Haverford (Pa). He specializes in practical applications of electronics. Despite the fact that he is blind, he is a highly valued teacher who overcomes his difficulties with admirable energy. In particular, he has developed various production processes through which blind people can construct devices that are significant to themselves. In addition to his blindness, Mr. Benham has also been struggling for the past year with a stiff knee due to an incorrect surgical intervention. There seems to be a possibility for him to have this treated better in Germany.
I mention all this because my question is short and simple: is there any chance that Benham will be invited to Europe as a guest professor? I address this question to you because it can apparently only be answered by someone who can judge his value as a specialist. Should he be judged such that there is a possibility, then I assume that I will find much interest among organizations for the blind to have him act in this direction as well. Should you not be able to answer my question yourself, but could refer me to the expert who is active closest to Benham's field of work, I would also be very grateful for that, as well as for any other hint that might be useful in this case.
