Bovengenoemde kleine studie belicht op zeer interessante wijze een aantal vraagstukken, die de laatste tijd de aandacht hebben gevraagd. De schrijver heeft onderzocht of zich tussen 1938 en 1952 de verschillen in welstand tussen de provincies van Italië hebben vergroot of verkleind. Hetzelfde onderzocht hij ook voor de Departementen van Frankrijk, de kantons van Zwitserland, de provincies van België en de staten van de Verenigde Staten. Ten slotte maakt hij ook berekeningen omtrent de verschillen in welstand tussen de landen van de wereld. Bij al deze onderzoekingen bedient hij zich van de zgn concentratiecurve van Lorentz, die, zoals men weet, met één oogopslag laat zien of een bepaalde verdeling gelijkmatiger of ongelijkmatiger is geworden.
De verschijnselen, die hij onderzocht heeft, zijn het aantal radioluisteraars, het verbruik van electrische energie voor verlichting, de belastingopbrengsten voor vermakelijkheden en tabak, het aantal automobielen, bepaalde inkomenscategorieën e.d. Hij stelt vast dat binnen de afzonderlijke landen in bijna alle gevallen een grotere mate van gelijkheid in 1952 heerste dan in 1938. Een dergelijke nivellering van de economische omstandigheden heeft echter niet plaats gevonden tussen de verschillende landen van de wereld: hier doet zich een toenemende divergentie voor. Deze studie werpt zodoende een interessant licht op het belang van het vraagstuk van de ontwikkeling van de minder-ontwikkelde landen.

The above-mentioned small study highlights in a very interesting way a number of issues that have recently demanded attention. The author has investigated whether the differences in prosperity between the provinces of Italy increased or decreased between 1938 and 1952. He also investigated the same for the Departments of France, the cantons of Switzerland, the provinces of Belgium and the states of the United States. Finally, he also makes calculations regarding the differences in prosperity between the countries of the world. In all these investigations he uses the so-called Lorentz concentration curve, which, as is known, shows at a glance whether a certain distribution has become more even or more uneven.
The phenomena he has investigated are the number of radio listeners, the consumption of electrical energy for lighting, the tax revenues for entertainment and tobacco, the number of automobiles, certain income categories, etc. He establishes that within the individual countries, in almost all cases, a greater degree of equality prevailed in 1952 than in 1938. However, such a leveling of economic conditions has not taken place between the different countries of the world: here an increasing divergence occurs. This study thus sheds an interesting light on the importance of the issue of the development of the less-developed countries.
