Beste Agnes,
Het heeft indertijd vrij veel moeite gekost om Arie's manuscript weer terug te krijgen van Posthumus. Het is mij wel gebleken dat deze tegen publicatie in zijn reeks toch wel overwegende bezwaren heeft. Enerzijds is de conjunctuur in het boekenvak veel minder goed en worden daardoor de hoge drukkosten een ernstige belemmering. Aan de andere kant ziet Posthuma verschillende bezwaren tegen onderdelen van Arie's betoog. Ik heb voor mijzelf toen de conclusie getrokken dat wij moesten wachten tot het onderwerp weer actueel zou worden en eventueel moesten denken aan een goedkopere vorm van publicatie.
Het is naar mijn mening nu zover dat het onderwerp weer actueel begint te worden. Ik heb mij daarom de laatste tijd weer met het manuscript bezig gehouden en hoop over enkele weken het zover te hebben bijgewerkt, dat het voor uitgave naar mijn mening geschikt is.
Nu zie ik twee mogelijkheden: ik wil er de Wiardi Beckman-stichting nog voor interesseren of ik wil trachten het op mijn bureau te laten vermenigvuldigen en van een enigszins smakelijk kaft te voorzien, waarbij ik dan ook graag een portret van Arie zou willen voegen. Mocht de Wiardi Beckman-stichting er voor voelen, dan kunnen wij misschien nog denken aan een mooiere vermenigvuldigingsvorm dan stencilen; ik denk aan rotaprint of misschien zelfs drukken. Maar in het laatste heb ik wel een beetje een hard hoofd. In elk geval wilde ik ook een klein voorbericht schrijven, waarvan ik je het ontwerp nog wel toestuur.
Het heeft wel ontzaggelijk lang geduurd voor je iets van mij hebt gehoord; dat is vooral omdat ik wilde afwachten totdat het onderwerp weer in het centrum van de belangstelling staat. Ik zal je natuurlijk op de hoogte houden van de verdere ontwikkeling.

At the time, it took quite a bit of effort to get Arie's manuscript back from Posthumus. It has become clear to me that he has significant objections to publishing it in his series. On the one hand, the economic situation in the book trade is much less favorable, and as a result, high printing costs are a serious obstacle. On the other hand, Posthuma sees various objections to parts of Arie's argument. I then concluded for myself that we had to wait until the subject became topical again and possibly consider a cheaper form of publication.
In my opinion, it has now reached the point where the subject is starting to become topical again. I have therefore been working on the manuscript again lately and hope to have it updated in a few weeks to the point where, in my opinion, it is suitable for publication.
Now I see two possibilities: I want to interest the Wiardi Beckman Foundation in it, or I want to try to have it reproduced at my office and provide it with a somewhat attractive cover, to which I would also like to add a portrait of Arie. Should the Wiardi Beckman Foundation be interested, we might still consider a nicer form of reproduction than mimeographing; I am thinking of rotaprint or perhaps even printing. But I am a bit skeptical about the latter. In any case, I also wanted to write a small foreword, the draft of which I will send to you.
It has indeed taken an awfully long time before you heard from me; that is mainly because I wanted to wait until the subject is back in the center of interest. I will, of course, keep you informed of further developments.
