Dear Professor Somers,
Thank you for your kind letter of October 13 which I read with much pleasure. I have thought the matter over, and I think it would be quite possible to supply you with some further text as you suggest. I am therefore sending you (by steamer) four papers which could perhaps be useful in the following way.
Paper (a) and (b) are the two you suggested yourself. Ik quite agree that they could be useful indeed. A reference to (a) could be made in the beginning of § 24 and could be called a further elucidation. Paper (b) has been quoted already in § 37 and this may be just the place where to refer to it.
I add as a new paper, also suitable for the purpose, paper (c) that could be referred to in § 38 by adding one sentence:" there are reasons to assume that the elasticities just discussed are higher for long-run than for short-run reactions. For a more complete discussion of some evidence of this point, the reader may be referred to annex (c)" (or whatever way of reference you prefer).
Finally I add paper (d). This is an article not yet published and submitted for publication to the editors of Econometrica Prof. Frisch and Mr Simpson of the Cowles Commission, Chicago. I understood from a first reaction of Prof. Frisch that they have not very much space just now, and I could imagine that they therefore would be glad to leave it to you. May I ask you to discuss this matter directly with Mr Simpson whom I send a copy of this letter. You will have to look at the paper before being able to judge its usefulness for our present purpose. If you do think it is useful I suggest that it should be added at the end of the book as a further chapter under the title "The Use of Econometric Research for the Purpose of Economic Policy (An Example)".
The numbers of the section should then perhaps be adapted to the numbering of the text you have already in your possession.. I do think that this paper is written in a rather simple way and therefore would be in place in the book, but I am very much interested to know your opinion.
I take it that you will take up matters with the publishers of the other three papers in order to get their approval for the reprinting.
