Zeer geachte Heer de Boer,
De heren Koopmans en Tinbergen hebben met mij overleg gepleegd over het verzoek vervat in Uw geacht schrijven van 4 Juni j.l., nr. 4/69, en hebben mij verzocht, mede namens hen, te willen antwoorden.
Laat ik dan beginnen met U mede te delen, dat wij bereid zijn om mede te werken aan hetgeen in Uw brief een "herscholings-weekend" wordt genoemd. Evenwel hebben wij, overigens in uiteenlopende mate, duidelijke bezwaren tegen een weekend op 8 en 9 September. Het weekend 29/30 September zou het eerste zijn na de zomervacantie, hetwelk ons drieën convenieert.
Het overleg over de verdeling van de stof heeft ons tot het standpunt geleid, dat wij menen, U t.a.v. de keuze van de inleiders een nadere suggestie te moeten doen. Met name de internationale aspecten van het vraagstuk, dat in discussie komt, verdienen een speciale behandeling en de Hogeschool is zo gelukkig in Prof. Posthuma te beschikken over iemand wien het bij uitstek gegeven is de noodzakelijke voorlichting te geven.
Daarbij komt, dat, indien Prof. Koopmans en ondergetekende beiden als inleider op zouden treden, naar ons gevoelen het gevaar geenszins denkbeeldig is dat wij, waar de terreinen, die onze belangstelling hebben veelal dezelfde zijn, om tot een zorgvuldige scheiding te geraken, te veel van elkaars gebied zouden ontzien, waardoor tenslotte een onbevredigende behandeling van het gehele vraagstuk, waarover men voorlichting verlangt, zou moeten worden gevreesd. Wij zouden U dus in overweging willen geven één van ons beiden met Prof. Posthuma als inleider uit te nodigen.
In verband met de omstandigheid dat U, blijkens Uw schrijven, ter zake van dit herscholings-weekend het advies hebt ingewonnen van de rector magnificus en de secretaris van de senaat, wordt aan deze heren een afschrift van dit schrijven toegezonden.

Dear Mr. de Boer,
Messrs. Koopmans and Tinbergen have consulted with me regarding the request contained in your esteemed letter of June 4 last, no. 4/69, and have requested me, also on their behalf, to respond.
Let me begin by informing you that we are willing to cooperate in what is referred to in your letter as a "retraining weekend." However, we have, albeit to varying degrees, clear objections to a weekend on September 8 and 9. The weekend of September 29/30 would be the first after the summer vacation that suits the three of us.
The consultation regarding the distribution of the material has led us to the position that we believe we should make a further suggestion to you regarding the choice of speakers. In particular, the international aspects of the issue under discussion deserve special treatment, and the University is fortunate to have in Prof. Posthuma someone who is pre-eminently qualified to provide the necessary information.
In addition, if Prof. Koopmans and the undersigned were both to act as speakers, it is in our opinion by no means imaginary that, since the fields of our interest are often the same, in order to achieve a careful separation, we would spare each other's territory too much, which would ultimately lead to an unsatisfactory treatment of the entire issue on which information is requested. We would therefore like to suggest that you invite one of the two of us with Prof. Posthuma as a speaker.
In connection with the fact that, according to your letter, you have sought advice from the rector magnificus and the secretary of the senate regarding this retraining weekend, a copy of this letter is being sent to these gentlemen.
