Zeer Geachte Professor,
Zoude U mij een gewaardeerd advies willen geven inzake het volgende: U hebt mij weliswaar slechts weinig ontmoet, doch ik mag misschien toch wel aannemen, dat mij toch de enigermate bekend is en aan de andere kant kent U juist door Uw werkzaamheid op internationaal terrein de mens, die mij goede raad zou kunnen geven. Ten slotte zijn wij ook nog partijgenoten, hetgeen mij nog te meer de vrijmoedigheid schonk mij juist tot U te wenden.
De zaak is nl. deze, dat de U.N. Economic Commission for Europe te Genève telkens in komen is het moment om 7 dezer voor „The Economist” „certain senior posts” in de Research and Planning Division te [vaceeren]. Ik meen redelijk aan de gestelde eisen te kunnen voldoen. Zowel wetenschappelijk - ik moge bijv. verwijzen naar de recente recensie, welke prof. v. Mering over „de Economist” van Mei j.l. over mijn jongste boek heeft gezegd - als praktisch - ik beheer de Engelse taal door herhaald langdurig verblijf in Engeland goed -, organisatorische arbeid en leiding geven zijn mij niet vreemd en de in de advertentie gestelde kennis van andere talen dan Frans en Engels bezit ik eveneens, daar ik behalve natuurlijk Duits ook Italiaans redelijk beheers en lees.
Nu kent U het milieu in Genève en mijne vraag aan U is derhalve, of U mij daarvoor geschikt acht. Ik zal het op prijs stellen indien U volkomen [juist] wilt zeggen wat U in deze vraag is opgekomen zijn zonder mij ontzien [?] [zonder] [?] [mij] [?] [te] [?] [ontzien] [?]: ik ben immers alleen gediend met een openhartig antwoord.
Wat mijn eigen overwegingen betreft, ik acht waarschijnlijk, dat ik een aanraking heb met de [vruchtbaarste] en de organisatorische werk op dit gebied doe. Dit is echter dikwijls ploegen op rotsen en ik zou de productieve jaren, die mij nog resten - ik ben thans 57 jaar oud, op zichzelf wellicht al een bezwaar? - gaarne op een meer voldoening gevende wijze besteden.
Ik zie met belangstelling Uw antwoord tegemoet; mocht U de zaak liever bespreken dan wilt U mij misschien wel opbellen ofwel wij een afspraak zouden kunnen maken.

Very Esteemed Professor,
Would you be willing to give me some valued advice regarding the following: although you have met me only a few times, I may perhaps assume that I am somewhat known to you, and on the other hand, precisely because of your activities in the international field, you know the kind of person who could give me good advice. Finally, we are also fellow party members, which gave me all the more confidence to turn precisely to you.
The matter is as follows: the U.N. Economic Commission for Europe in Geneva is currently, as of the 7th of this month, advertising in "The Economist" for "certain senior posts" to be [vacated] in the Research and Planning Division. I believe I can reasonably meet the requirements set. Both scientifically - I may, for example, refer to the recent review that Prof. v. Mering wrote in "de Economist" last May about my latest book - and practically - I have a good command of the English language due to repeated long stays in England -; organizational work and leadership are not foreign to me, and I also possess the knowledge of languages other than French and English mentioned in the advertisement, as besides German, of course, I also reasonably master and read Italian.
Now you know the environment in Geneva, and my question to you is therefore whether you consider me suitable for it. I would appreciate it if you would tell me exactly what occurred to you regarding this question without sparing me: after all, I am only served by a candid answer.
As for my own considerations, I consider it likely that I have contact with the [most fruitful] and organizational work in this field. However, this is often like plowing on rocks, and I would like to spend the productive years that still remain for me - I am now 57 years old, in itself perhaps already an objection? - in a more satisfying way.
