Zeer geachte Heer Postma,
Het spijt mij U lastig te komen vallen met een aangelegenheid van nauwelijks ambtelijke aard. Ik heb bij mij op bezoek gehad de heer J.J.M.v.d. Wateren, hulpschrijver op het 1e Kantoor den Haag van de ontvanger der directe belastingen. De heer v.d. Wateren is aldus werkzaam onder de directe leiding van de heer Both, hoofdcommies bij genoemd kantoor, dat onder leiding staat van de hoofdontvanger de heer A. van Rijn. Hem is tegen 1 Augustus ontslag aangezegd wegens terugkeer van een der andere ambtenaren uit militaire dienst. De heer v.d. Wateren is 62 jaar oud en heeft slechts ongeveer 6 dienstjaren, waardoor zijn pensioenkansen zullen verdwijnen. Gezien het feit dat in de categorie van de oudere hoofdarbeiders een overcompleet bestaat, is er bijzonder weinig kans dat hij elders aan het werk komt. Hij zal dus op een of andere wijze toch ten laste van de gemeenschap komen. Wegens zijn psychische toestand is werkloosheid bovendien zeer slecht voor de betrokkene. Ik vraag mij af of, als men de omstandigheden zo ziet, de besparing die men kan verkrijgen door hem te ontslaan voor het Rijk als geheel gezien niet bijzonder gering is, en, indien men de menselijke factor ook in rekening brengt, eigenlijk afwezig. Zonder mij ook maar enigermate te kunnen en willen uitspreken over de voor- en tegens van zijn geval, ben ik zo vrij Uw aandacht daarop te vestigen, in de hoop dat er wellicht nog iets op te vinden is.

Dear Mr. Postma,
I am sorry to bother you with a matter of a hardly official nature. I have had a visit from Mr. J.J.M.v.d. Wateren, assistant clerk at the 1st Office in The Hague of the collector of direct taxes. Mr. v.d. Wateren is thus working under the direct supervision of Mr. Both, chief clerk at the said office, which is under the direction of the chief collector Mr. A. van Rijn. He has been given notice of dismissal as of August 1 due to the return of one of the other officials from military service. Mr. v.d. Wateren is 62 years old and has only about 6 years of service, which means his pension prospects will disappear. Given the fact that there is a surplus in the category of older office workers, there is very little chance that he will find work elsewhere. He will therefore, in one way or another, still become a burden on the community. Because of his psychological state, unemployment is also very bad for the person concerned. I wonder whether, looking at the circumstances in this way, the savings that can be obtained by dismissing him are not particularly small for the State as a whole, and, if one also takes the human factor into account, actually non-existent. Without being able or willing to express myself in any way on the pros and cons of his case, I take the liberty of drawing your attention to it, in the hope that something might still be found.
