Zeer geachte Heer Havinga,
Als ik Uw brief goed begrijp zult U dus eerst de vergunning van de Senaat en het Ministerie van O.K. en W. moeten verwerven. Is dit eenmaal geschied, dan lijkt het mij verstandig wanneer U eerst een dag naar Rotterdam komt om met alle betrokken hoogleraren te spreken. Ik geloof dat de meeste mijner collega's inderdaad gaarne zeer tegemoetkomend zijn in wat betreft hun eisen tot het volgen van colleges, maar U zult dat toch met ieder afzonderlijk even moeten bespreken. Voor wat mijzelf betreft sta ik inderdaad op dat standpunt. Het betekent intussen natuurlijk wel, dat U bij Uw zelfstudie moet trachten m.n. ook oefening in mathematische vraagstukken te verkrijgen door veel vraagstukken te maken. U zult met mijn colleges slechts na het candidaatsexamen te maken krijgen en ik geef bovendien maar een heel enkel college. Ook binnen het gebied van de Econometrie hebt U met verschillende anderen te maken, m.n. de heren Theil en Hartog. Vandaar mijn raad om eens naar Rotterdam te komen als het zover is en dan op de spreekuren dezer heren eens met hen te overleggen.
Ik wens U intussen gaarne alle succes, want ik apprecieer Uw poging natuurlijk zeer.

Dear Mr. Havinga,
If I understand your letter correctly, you will first have to obtain permission from the Senate and the Ministry of Education, Arts and Sciences. Once this has happened, it seems wise to me if you first come to Rotterdam for a day to speak with all the professors involved. I believe that most of my colleagues are indeed very willing to be accommodating regarding their requirements for attending lectures, but you will still have to discuss this with each of them individually. As far as I am concerned, I indeed take that position. In the meantime, it naturally means that in your self-study you must try to gain practice in mathematical problems, especially by doing many problems. You will only have to deal with my lectures after the candidate exam and, moreover, I only give a very few lectures. Also within the field of Econometrics, you have to deal with various others, especially Messrs. Theil and Hartog. Hence my advice to come to Rotterdam once the time comes and then consult with these gentlemen during their office hours.
In the meantime, I wish you every success, as I naturally appreciate your effort very much.
