Dear Phil,
Thank you very much for your letter of January 31. I was very glad to have it and it reminded me of my terrible delay in writing. Already several weeks ago I intended to write to you, hoping that meanwhile you would have received the books. To be honest, it was my intention to offer them to you as a present, thinking of the many things both of you did for us, and I hope that you are still willing to accept them though I am so late in telling you this. If you don't mind, I prefer to send the cheque back.
Your help with our departure was beyond every valuation; we were so very glad all went so smoothly. Our crossing was very easy, and since our return I had, of course, to clear many backlog-affairs.
We are always glad to be reminded of the pleasant atmosphere in Haverford as by meeting Mr and Mrs Teaf, and also by meeting Prof. Harriss from Columbia, who at present lectures at the Rotterdam School of Economics.
I hope that your work will proceed according the schedule, and that by June you will have that feeling of freedom you so rightly describe by referring to the possibility of tackling short problems. I have that same desire for a change in rhythm when I finish a longer manuscript: it is very pleasant then only to have to do with short problems you may finish in one or two evenings.
Back at my office, I am now involved in interesting further monetary discussions which I am sure will result in some article by Schouten and myself of which we will let you have an offprint. Also the Bureau managed very well to get the 1954-Plan through which is already being printed.
Both Els and Hanneke do feel well again here; Els for obvious reasons. Hanneke from time to time in fairly good English tries to revive the discussions she had with the Benham boys
