Beste Dick,
Ik kreeg je brief van 4 September over de plannen van Kuznets. Het spreekt vanzelf dat ik graag zal proberen hiervoor belangstelling te wekken. Ik geloof dat ik wel mag aannemen dat in het bijzonder in het N.E.I. voor deze zaak belangstelling zal bestaan en ik hoop je daarover binnen korte tijd nadere mededelingen te kunnen doen. Ik ben het geheel met je eens dat het de moeite waard zou zijn, terwijl ik weet dat Lambers graag eens wat meer in de historische vraagstukken zou willen duiken.
Het is leuk dat je bij de Teafs gaat logeren; ik ben het geheel met je eens dat hij ons in den Haag bijzonder prettig heeft geholpen. Er was helaas aan het Institute of Social Studies wel het een en ander op te knappen en we zijn nu bezig nieuwe wegen te vinden. Wij hadden in Juni een conferentie met Mevrouw Myrdal en enige vertegenwoordigers van UNESCO teneinde het research werk, dat wij ons voorstellen tot de kern van het Institute te maken, te oriënteren op een goede internationale arbeidsverdeling.
Ik vrees dat ik je nog niet eens had bedankt voor je hartelijke felicitatie in verband met mijn erepromotie. Deze plechtigheid is nu nabij gekomen en ik begin langzamerhand de brieven te beantwoorden. Je hebt natuurlijk wel begrepen dat ik dit compliment van de Amsterdamse Universiteit als toepasselijk op onze hele groep "deserteurs" uit de Wis- en Natuurkunde beschouw.

Dear Dick,
I received your letter of 4 September about Kuznets' plans. It goes without saying that I will gladly try to generate interest for this. I believe I may assume that there will be interest in this matter particularly in the N.E.I. and I hope to be able to give you further information about it within a short time. I entirely agree with you that it would be worthwhile, while I know that Lambers would like to delve a bit more into historical issues.
It is nice that you are going to stay with the Teafs; I entirely agree with you that he helped us very pleasantly in The Hague. Unfortunately, there was some tidying up to do at the Institute of Social Studies and we are now busy finding new ways. In June we had a conference with Mrs. Myrdal and some representatives of UNESCO in order to orient the research work, which we envision making the core of the Institute, towards a good international division of labor.
I fear that I had not even thanked you yet for your warm congratulations in connection with my honorary doctorate. This ceremony is now approaching and I am gradually beginning to answer the letters. You have of course understood that I regard this compliment from the University of Amsterdam as applicable to our entire group of "deserters" from Mathematics and Physics.
