Waarde secretaris,
Tot mijn spijt ben ik niet in staat de Senaatsvergadering op donderdag 12 januari a.s. bij te wonen, omdat men mij verzocht heeft de openingsrede te houden van de cursus van het Institute des Etudes Européennes aan de Universiteit te Turijn. Er zijn echter wel twee verzoeken, die ik aan de vergadering zou hebben te doen.
Het eerste verzoek heeft op mijzelf betrekking. Mij is verzocht om gedurende zes weken deel te nemen aan het planningwerk in het Indian Statistical Institute. Ik heb gemeend dit te moeten aanvaarden en zal daarom van 15 januari tot eind februari afwezig zijn. Met de heren Koyck en Hartog heb ik besproken hoe mijn college-uren in die tijd door hen gebruikt zouden kunnen worden, waartegenover ik later over een aantal uren zou mogen beschikken. Ik hoop, dat er op deze wijze geen bezwaar tegen bestaat, dat ik gedurende deze periode afwezig ben.
Het tweede verzoek betreft het aanbod aan collega Theil. Ik zou het bijzonder op prijs stellen, indien de Senaat de mogelijkheid om aan collega Theil een gewoon hoogleraarschap aan te bieden, nogmaals in welwillende overweging zou willen nemen.

Dear Secretary,
To my regret, I am unable to attend the Senate meeting on Thursday, January 12 next, because I have been requested to give the opening speech of the course of the Institute des Etudes Européennes at the University of Turin. There are, however, two requests that I would like to make to the meeting.
The first request concerns myself. I have been asked to participate for six weeks in the planning work at the Indian Statistical Institute. I felt I should accept this and will therefore be absent from January 15 until the end of February. I have discussed with Messrs. Koyck and Hartog how my lecture hours during that time could be used by them, in exchange for which I would be able to have a number of hours later. I hope that in this way there is no objection to my being absent during this period.
The second request concerns the offer to colleague Theil. I would particularly appreciate it if the Senate would once again take into benevolent consideration the possibility of offering colleague Theil a regular professorship.
