Amice,
Je brief van 27 Februari drukt nog zwaar op mijn geweten. De stukken die je in de Groene schrijft, behoef je mij niet te zenden want ik sla ze nooit over en ben er vrijwel zonder uitzondering mee in mijn schik. Ik vind ze aanmerkelijk beter dan al je concurrenten.
Wat je artikel over de vorm van de vraagcurve betreft, ik moet tot mijn spijt bekennen dat me werkelijk de tijd ontbreekt om hierin zo diep in te gaan als het onderwerp waard zou zijn. Daarmede bedoel ik dat het nodig zou zijn de zaak ook geheel mathematisch met gebruik van de inkomensverdeling door te werken. Ik stel dus uitdrukkelijk voorop dat ik daartoe geen gelegenheid heb gehad en mijn verdere opmerkingen zijn dus ook onder dit voorbehoud.
Ziehier dan verder mijn indruk: met je critiek op de rechte lijn en de hyperbool ben ik het wel eens. Ook zal de werkelijke vorm van de vraagcurve wel ongeveer zo zijn als je zegt. De gedachte om de grensvraag nader te analyseren lijkt mij een gelukkige. Dat deze naaldvormig is bij de individuele vraag voor een ondeelbaar goed, is m.i. juist. De collectieve vraag lijkt mij niet zuiver Gaussistisch: de inkomensverdeling is immers scheef en het lijkt à priori mogelijk dat de verdeling van de grensprijs dat dan ook zou zijn. Het gehele betoog over de niet-ondeelbare goederen is natuurlijk minder hecht gefundeerd en is ongetwijfeld een moeilijk onderwerp. Ik ben niet zeker dat er een algemene oplossing zou moeten bestaan.

Your letter of 27 February still weighs heavily on my conscience. You do not need to send me the pieces you write in the Groene, because I never skip them and am almost without exception very pleased with them. I find them considerably better than all your competitors.
Regarding your article on the shape of the demand curve, I must confess to my regret that I truly lack the time to go as deeply into this as the subject would deserve. By that I mean that it would be necessary to work through the matter entirely mathematically using the income distribution. I therefore explicitly state beforehand that I have not had the opportunity to do so, and my further remarks are thus also subject to this reservation.
Here then are my further impressions: I agree with your criticism of the straight line and the hyperbola. Also, the actual shape of the demand curve will probably be roughly as you say. The idea of analyzing the marginal demand further seems like a happy one to me. That this is needle-shaped in the case of individual demand for an indivisible good is, in my opinion, correct. The collective demand does not seem purely Gaussian to me: after all, the income distribution is skewed and it seems a priori possible that the distribution of the marginal price would be so as well. The entire argument regarding non-indivisible goods is, of course, less firmly grounded and is undoubtedly a difficult subject. I am not sure that a general solution should exist.
