Dezer dagen met Mevrouw Ehrenfest sprekende begreep ik dat zij het wel bijzonder plezierig zou vinden als een harer manuscripten der thermodynamica zou kunnen worden gedrukt. Nu heb ik tevens begrepen dat een van je collega's, de heer de Boer, de Noord-Hollandsche Uitgeversmaatschappij over zulke uitgaven adviseert. Zijn advies schijnt ofwel ongunstig te zijn of niet te zijn uitgebracht. Daarnaast heb ik begrepen dat collega Westerdijk uit Delft bereid is een aanbeveling voor het boekje te geven. Het is niet mijn bedoeling om mij in deze zaak te "steken", maar alleen om even een signaal bij je te laten doordringen met de vraag of hier nog iets aan te doen is. Ik placht indertijd enthousiast te zijn voor de zienswijze die Mevrouw Ehrenfest ten aanzien van de thermodynamica heeft opgebouwd en vind daarin de moed je dit signaal door te geven. Het is niet de bedoeling dat ik er antwoord op krijg; misschien wel Mevrouw Ehrenfest als daartoe aanleiding bestaat.

Speaking with Mrs. Ehrenfest these days, I understood that she would find it particularly pleasant if one of her manuscripts on thermodynamics could be printed. Now I have also understood that one of your colleagues, Mr. de Boer, advises the North-Holland Publishing Company on such publications. His advice seems to be either unfavorable or not yet issued. In addition, I have understood that colleague Westerdijk from Delft is prepared to give a recommendation for the booklet. It is not my intention to "interfere" in this matter, but only to let a signal reach you with the question of whether something can still be done about this. At the time, I used to be enthusiastic about the viewpoint that Mrs. Ehrenfest has built up regarding thermodynamics and find therein the courage to pass this signal on to you. It is not the intention that I receive an answer to it; perhaps Mrs. Ehrenfest will, if there is reason to do so.
