Zeer geachte Heer Bartels,
Mij viel een grafiek op in het Bulletin de l'Institut de Recherches Economiques et Sociales van September 1954, blz. 612, betreffende de in- en uitvoer van België. Men ziet daar hoe sinds ongeveer 2 jaren deze wederom bijzonder sterk parallel lopen, evenals dat het geval is met de in- en uitvoer van Nederland in de door U onderzochte periode. Tegelijkertijd ziet men echter dat voor de periode 1947 tot midden 1952 het parallellisme veel geringer is. Het zou interessant zijn te onderzoeken of er een bijzondere oorzaak kan worden gevonden voor het weer optreden van het parallellisme, dat het onderwerp van Uw proefschrift is. Dit zou wellicht een extra licht kunnen werpen op wat wij tot nu toe hebben getracht te voorschijn te brengen. De aflevering kan in de bibliotheek van het Centraal Planbureau door U worden geleend.

Dear Mr. Bartels,
I noticed a graph in the Bulletin de l'Institut de Recherches Economiques et Sociales of September 1954, p. 612, concerning the imports and exports of Belgium. One can see there how for about 2 years these have again been running particularly strongly in parallel, just as is the case with the imports and exports of the Netherlands in the period investigated by you. At the same time, however, one sees that for the period 1947 to mid-1952 the parallelism is much less. It would be interesting to investigate whether a special cause can be found for the re-emergence of the parallelism, which is the subject of your dissertation. This might shed extra light on what we have tried to bring to light so far. The issue can be borrowed by you from the library of the Central Planning Bureau.
