Beste Philip,
Mag ik je schriftelijk gelukwensen met je 25-jarig jubileum? Ik ben namelijk op reis vanmiddag en zal dus niet op de receptie kunnen komen. Ik twijfel er niet aan of je zult nog weleens terugdenken aan de dag van toen, net bij het begin van de grote depressie. Er is wat de Statistiek betreft heel wat veranderd en je hebt er een zeer actief aandeel in gehad. Ik heb het erg prettig gevonden dat wij elkaar daar ontmoet hebben, want ik heb veel wijsheid van je opgestoken.

May I congratulate you in writing on your 25th anniversary? I am traveling this afternoon and will therefore not be able to attend the reception. I have no doubt that you will occasionally look back on that day, right at the beginning of the Great Depression. As far as Statistics is concerned, a lot has changed and you have played a very active part in it. I found it very pleasant that we met each other there, because I have learned a lot of wisdom from you.
