PROF. DR J. TINBERGEN THE HAGUE, 2 February 1954
Sijzenlaan 41
Professor Horst Menderhausen, Federal Reserve Bank of New York, New York 45, N.Y.
Dear Horst,
It was a pleasure to have your letter of January 27. It is correct that there is a European university named "Collège d'Europe" in Belgium; it is in Bruges. The institute is, however, still a rather small one; the number of students is only about 40. Since only part of them are specialized on economic questions you will understand that the number of permanent economic teachers is very restricted. This I only say in order to make it clear to you that the chances are not big. Nevertheless I am sending your letter to the rector, Prof. H. Brugmans, because we are certainly interested in your willingness to come to Europe and you never can tell what happens. At present W. Hoffmann from Münster is teaching there and incidentally I am giving myself a few lectures. I shall let you know if I have more information about the future of the economic chair.
Both Verdoorn and I are very glad to learn that you made good progress on the manuscript you promised. We are looking forward to read it.
With best personal regards,
yours very sincerely,
