Ondergetekenden, leden van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Academie van Wetenschappen, afdeling Letterkunde, bevelen gaarne als correspondent aan de heer Dr Tj. C. Koopmans.
Dr Koopmans, als Nederlander in 1910 geboren, is thans Amerikaans staatsburger en hoogleraar in de Economie aan de "University of Chicago" te Chicago.
Van opleiding natuurkundige (hij promoveerde te Leiden bij Prof. Kramers) heeft hij zich reeds tijdens zijn studie tot de mathematische statistiek en de mathematische economie gewend. Reeds zijn proefschrift "Linear Regression Analysis of Economic Time Series" bracht een belangrijke bijdrage tot verdieping der methoden van statistische toetsing van economische theorieën.
Nadat hij enkele jaren aan de Nederlandse Economische Hogeschool de colleges van Dr J. Tinbergen had waargenomen en bij het Nederlandsch Economisch Instituut een onderzoek had verricht, gepubliceerd onder de titel "Tanker Freight Rates and Tankship Building" (Haarlem 1939), verrichtte hij economisch-statistisch onderzoekingswerk bij het Secretariaat van de Volkenbond (1939) en vervolgens aan enige instellingen in de Verenigde Staten, waar hij thans, naast zijn hoogleraarschap, "Director of Research" is bij de zg. Cowles Commission, het centrum van econometrisch onderzoek. Talrijke bijdragen op het gebied van de econometrie verschenen van zijn hand. Ten dele worden daarin kwesties van statistische methoden behandeld; in een discussie met Keynes gaf hij in 1940 hierover een klassieke uiteenzetting in de "Journal of Political Economy": "The Logic of Econometric Business Cycle Research". In de laatste jaren verschenen verschillende publicaties over de nieuwere methoden die sindsdien in Chicago zijn uitgewerkt (o.a. "Statistical Estimation of Simultaneous Economic Relations", Journal Amer. Stat. Ass. 1945). Andere zijner geschriften hebben betrekking op de theoretische economie, in het bijzonder de theorie van de productie, of behandelen resultaten van concreet onderzoek.
Tijdens de oorlog verrichtte hij ten behoeve van het Amerikaanse gouvernement onderzoekingen over de meest efficiënte routes der vrachtschepen over de wereldzeeën, rekening houdende met de noodzaak van een minimum afstand in ballast varen ("Optimum Utilization of the Transportation System", Proceedings Int. Stat. Conf. Washington 1947). Soortgelijke bijdragen werden door hem geleverd in de uitwerking van het vraagstuk op welke wijze de luchtbrug naar Berlijn zo efficiënt mogelijk kon worden georganiseerd.
Professor Koopmans heeft steeds wetenschappelijk werk van de hoogste kwaliteit geleverd, waarbij een scherp economisch onderscheidingsvermogen werd gepaard aan toepassing van de meest moderne mathematische hulpmiddelen.

MEMORANDUM OF RECOMMENDATION AS CORRESPONDENT OF THE ROYAL NETHERLANDS ACADEMY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES OF DR. TJALLING C. KOOPMANS
The undersigned, members of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, Humanities Division, gladly recommend Dr. Tj. C. Koopmans as a correspondent.
Dr. Koopmans, born a Dutchman in 1910, is currently an American citizen and professor of Economics at the "University of Chicago" in Chicago.
A physicist by training (he received his doctorate in Leiden under Prof. Kramers), he already turned to mathematical statistics and mathematical economics during his studies. His dissertation "Linear Regression Analysis of Economic Time Series" already made a significant contribution to deepening the methods of statistical testing of economic theories.
After he had taken over the lectures of Dr. J. Tinbergen at the Netherlands School of Economics for several years and had conducted research at the Netherlands Economic Institute, published under the title "Tanker Freight Rates and Tankship Building" (Haarlem 1939), he performed economic-statistical research work at the Secretariat of the League of Nations (1939) and subsequently at several institutions in the United States, where he is currently, in addition to his professorship, "Director of Research" at the so-called Cowles Commission, the center of econometric research. Numerous contributions in the field of econometrics have appeared from his hand. In part, these deal with issues of statistical methods; in a discussion with Keynes in 1940, he gave a classic exposition on this in the "Journal of Political Economy": "The Logic of Econometric Business Cycle Research". In recent years, various publications have appeared on the newer methods that have since been developed in Chicago (e.g., "Statistical Estimation of Simultaneous Economic Relations", Journal Amer. Stat. Ass. 1945). Other of his writings relate to theoretical economics, in particular the theory of production, or deal with results of concrete research.
During the war, he conducted research on behalf of the American government on the most efficient routes for cargo ships across the world's oceans, taking into account the need for a minimum distance sailing in ballast ("Optimum Utilization of the Transportation System", Proceedings Int. Stat. Conf. Washington 1947). Similar contributions were made by him in the elaboration of the problem of how the Berlin Airlift could be organized as efficiently as possible.
Professor Koopmans has always delivered scientific work of the highest quality, in which a sharp economic discernment was paired with the application of the most modern mathematical tools.
