Dear Dr Harris,
I am very glad to give you some particulars about Dr Verdoorn and his book.
Dr Verdoorn studied economics at the University of Amsterdam and took his doctor degree in Rotterdam; I acted as his promotor. His thesis consisted in a statistical analysis of the phenomenon of fixed costs. He showed that there is no evidence to believe that since 1870 the ratio between fixed and variable costs changed very much, and he tried to make it understandable in which, I think, he succeeded. Dr Verdoorn is now chief of the research section of the Central Planning Office for the Dutch Government.
His book on market analyses is in my opinion a very good one. In fact he succeeded in giving a very clear treatment of the statistical and econometric methods used in market analyses in a rather simple form and with a large number of applications on concrete cases. The book therefore at the same time represents a compendium of practical work that has been done in this field. I warmly recommend the book for translation.
