Amice,
Deze keer kom ik je raad vragen en eventuele hulp inroepen voor de zoon van een mijner kennissen. Deze jonge man, JAN SCHAPER, Rapenburg 78, Leiden, heeft zekere handicaps, waardoor hij zich uitermate moeilijk uit. Hij is verlegen en nerveus. Sinds zijn jongensjaren heeft hij grote belangstelling voor technisch werk; hij bracht vele uren op het stationsemplacement door en was, zoals uit bijgaand getuigschrift blijkt, ook een zomervacantie werkzaam bij de grofsmederij Leiden. Hij heeft thans getracht de M.T.S. te volgen (nadat hij eindexamen H.B.S. had gehaald) doch is hier op het tekenen gestrand, hetgeen voor hem natuurlijk extra moeilijk is. Zijn ouders vragen zich af of hij als volontair niet enige tijd, bijv. bij de Machinefabrieken in Hengelo, werkzaam zou mogen zijn. Steeds is namelijk gebleken dat hij buitengemeen toegewijd werkt, doch ten enemale niet "toont" bij eerste kennismaking. Zijn voorkeur zou uitgaan naar de gieterij, niet dus naar de tekenkamer.
Ik heb er geen idee van of dit in het kader van de bestaande werkwijze bij onze fabrieken mogelijk is, doch leg je de vraag voor, omdat je anders misschien nog een andere weg weet.

Amice,
This time I come to ask your advice and possibly call in your help for the son of one of my acquaintances. This young man, JAN SCHAPER, Rapenburg 78, Leiden, has certain handicaps, which make it extremely difficult for him to express himself. He is shy and nervous. Since his boyhood years he has had a great interest in technical work; he spent many hours at the station yard and was, as appears from the enclosed certificate, also employed during a summer vacation at the blacksmith shop in Leiden. He has now tried to attend the M.T.S. (after he had passed the H.B.S. final exam) but failed here on drawing, which is of course extra difficult for him. His parents wonder whether he might be allowed to work as a volunteer for some time, e.g. at the Machine Factories in Hengelo. It has always appeared that he works exceptionally dedicatedly, but does not "show" it at all upon first acquaintance. His preference would be for the foundry, so not for the drawing room.
I have no idea whether this is possible within the framework of the existing way of working at our factories, but I am putting the question to you because you might otherwise know another way.
