Zeer geachte Mejuffrouw Goris,
Mijn voorlopig oordeel over Uw proefschrift is dat ik het aanvaard. Ik zou U reeds lang hebben geantwoord, ware het niet dat het sinds enige weken verblijft bij collega Witteveen teneinde te weten of hij voor opname in de serie van de Noordhollandse Uitgeversmij voelt. Ik heb hem nu onmiddellijk geschreven om zijn antwoord te krijgen. Zodra ik dat heb, zal ik U verder berichten, doch in één opzicht kan ik U reeds geruststellen; het is ook mogelijk tijdens de vacantie te promoveren. Dat is mij althans door collega Glasz medegedeeld; doch zelfs onmiddellijk na de vacantie (23 September) zou ik nog gelegenheid hebben. Er kunnen dus geen ongelukken geschieden!

Dear Miss Goris,
My preliminary judgment on your dissertation is that I accept it. I would have answered you long ago, were it not for the fact that it has been with colleague Witteveen for several weeks in order to know if he feels like including it in the series of the Noordhollandse Uitgeversmij. I have now written to him immediately to get his answer. As soon as I have that, I will inform you further, but in one respect I can already reassure you; it is also possible to graduate during the vacation. At least that is what colleague Glasz told me; but even immediately after the vacation (September 23) I would still have the opportunity. So no accidents can happen!
