Dear Mr. Brotte,
I have received your letter of July 4th and I am pleased to send you under separate cover a review of the year 1948 compiled by one of the large Dutch banks where you will find a summary of the major ports. I regret not knowing of a more recent study in French on the port of Rotterdam.
You will find current statistics with a French explanation in the following publications:
1. "Goederenverkeer in de haven van Rotterdam" (Movement of goods in the port of Rotterdam) and
2. "Binnengekomen zeeschepen" (vessels entered), monthly mimeographed publications of the "Havenbedrijf der gemeente Rotterdam" (Municipal Port Authority of Rotterdam, address: Stieltjesstraat 27, Rotterdam-Z)
and in
3. "Statistiek van handel, nijverheid en verkeer" (Statistics of trade, industry and traffic), published by the Chamber of Commerce; address: Kamer van Koophandel en Fabrieken, Beursgebouw, Coolsingel, Rotterdam-C. Furthermore, this Chamber of Commerce regularly publishes brochures in French about the port of Rotterdam.
4. The best sources of information are found in the publications of the Central Bureau of Statistics (Oostduinlaan 2, The Hague) but they are not translated into French:
a. information on seaports (monthly publication);
b. information on inland navigation (annual publication);
c. information on international inland navigation (annual publication).
The importance of the links with the Meuse is surpassed by the great interests of Rotterdam regarding Rhine navigation, and I doubt there is much literature on the former subject. It is especially in the province of Limburg where there is an interest in the navigation of the Meuse, e.g., the Limburg mines with the ports of Stein and Born. There, a direct communication with the Rhine is requested, a new canal towards the eastern part of North Brabant, and naturally also the elimination of the Lanaye bottleneck in Belgium.
