Dear Dr. Schmidt:
Dr. E. deVries asked me to answer your letter to him of February 16, 1955, while apologizing that he did not do so before. He did, however, take up the matter with Dr. Donner, Executive Director for Germany, some time in February this year. The difficulty with becoming a trainee with the Bank is that the possibilities are very restricted: in fact, only one German trainee has so far been taken by the Bank and the number of places available is very limited. You might, however, also try to become an ordinary younger staff member. Meanwhile I have talked the matter over once more with Dr. Donner, who advises that you write to:

In fact, Dr. Donner has written already to Dr. Drechsler about you.
You might explain to Dr. Drechsler that since Dr. Donner informed the Ministry about you some time ago, he may already know about your desire to work with the Bank.
You might then specify that you are not thinking exclusively of a traineeship, but would also be interested in the possibility of joining the Bank as a younger staff member. You may mention that Dr. deVries and I are willing to support your application and, since you understand that recently candidates for such posts have been proposed to Mr. Fowler, the Bank's personnel manager, you may ask Dr. Drechsler whether he could also support your application. You should make it clear that you are quite willing to go to Bonn to present yourself to him.
