Beste Tjalling,
Je brief van 11 Juni heeft hier enige opschudding veroorzaakt, omdat we aan de ene kant beseften hoe belangrijk een dergelijk jaar voor Theil zou zijn, doch aan de andere kant meenden dat het vrijwel uitgesloten is dat hij op zo korte termijn zijn werk hier in de steek laat. Hij heeft met name in Rotterdam juist het initiatief genomen tot een verzwaard programma waarin hij zelf enigermate meespeelt, terwijl vooral een omvangrijk project, dat door de Nederlandse Organisatie voor Zuiver Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek wordt gesubsidieerd, geheel op hem drijft. Het gaat hier om het opnieuw vaststellen van een conjunctuurmodel voor Nederland, dat hij met een grote voortvarendheid heeft aangepakt en dat min of meer aan een tijdschema is gebonden. Hijzelf zal je wel uitvoeriger schrijven, maar wij hadden allen hetzelfde gevoel, namelijk dat het niet zou gaan.
Het spijt ons dat wij er niet wat eerder van hebben geweten, dan was het nog denkbaar geweest dit alles anders te organiseren. Het spreekt vanzelf dat Theil hoop dat zich een gelegenheid later nog eens zal voordoen, waarbij ik tevens mijn hoop voeg dat het je lukken zal een vervanger te krijgen.

Your letter of June 11 has caused some commotion here, because on the one hand we realized how important such a year would be for Theil, but on the other hand we thought it is almost impossible for him to leave his work here on such short notice. In Rotterdam in particular, he has just taken the initiative for an intensified program in which he himself plays a certain role, while especially an extensive project, which is subsidized by the Netherlands Organisation for Pure Scientific Research, depends entirely on him. This concerns the re-establishment of a business cycle model for the Netherlands, which he has tackled with great vigor and which is more or less bound to a schedule. He himself will probably write to you in more detail, but we all had the same feeling, namely that it would not work.
We regret that we did not know about it a bit sooner, as it might then have been conceivable to organize all this differently. It goes without saying that Theil hopes that an opportunity will arise again later, while I also add my hope that you will succeed in finding a replacement.
