Amice,
In antwoord op je brief van 2 November kan ik je mededelen dat mijn oordeel over Dr Stuvel gunstig luidt. Hij heeft blijk gegeven een zeer degelijk wetenschappelijk werker te zijn die ook de pen op vaardige wijze voert. Ik denk daarbij bv. aan wat hij schreef in "De Economist" over de nationale rekeningen ¹). Ofschoon hij zich in het bijzonder heeft bewogen op econometrisch terrein (getuige zijn proefschrift waarop hij doctoraat cum laude ontving) blijkt uit voornoemd economisch artikel dat hij zich ook zeer goed op verbale wijze in wetenschappelijke onderwerpen kan bewegen. Daarnaast zijn ook een aantal populaire beschouwingen van zijn hand verschenen over actuele economische vraagstukken, o.m. in "Economisch-Statistische Berichten" van enkele jaren geleden, toen hij van Engeland uit aan dit tijdschrift medewerkte.
Ik zou hem zeer ongaarne missen aan mijn Bureau, maar meen verplicht te zijn dit gunstige oordeel over hem uit te spreken. Het is mij bekend dat hij aspiraties in de door jou bedoelde richting heeft.

Amice,
In response to your letter of November 2, I can inform you that my judgment of Dr. Stuvel is favorable. He has shown himself to be a very solid scientific worker who also wields the pen in a skillful manner. I am thinking, for example, of what he wrote in "De Economist" about the national accounts ¹). Although he has particularly moved in the econometric field (as evidenced by his thesis for which he received his doctorate cum laude), it appears from the aforementioned economic article that he can also move very well in a verbal manner in scientific subjects. In addition, a number of popular reflections by his hand have appeared on current economic issues, including in "Economisch-Statistische Berichten" from a few years ago, when he contributed to this journal from England.
I would be very reluctant to lose him at my Bureau, but I feel obliged to express this favorable judgment of him. I am aware that he has aspirations in the direction you intended.
