Dear Sir,
Through the intermediary of Prof. Tinbergen, Prof. Derksen of the Statistical Office of the United Nations has asked me if I should like to come to Rio de Janeiro to take part in researches into national income, social accounting, etc., which will be executed by the Fundação Getúlio Vargas. With reference to this question I should like to inform you that I am very glad to apply for this function.
Born in 1921, I attended the lectures at the Netherlands School of Economics in Rotterdam from 1939 to the beginning of 1948 with an interruption of 3 years during the war. In 1949 I passed the final examination (M.A.) with qualification "good". From 1946 through 1948 I also worked as an assistant at the Netherlands School of Economics at Rotterdam for economic and statistical research. From 1948 up to now I have been a civil servant at the Central Planning Bureau in The Hague, which, under the directorate of Professor Tinbergen, is an advisory body to the Netherlands' Government for the coordination of economic, financial and social policy. I worked for one year at this bureau on general problems of the branch studies division (e.g. on the computation of index numbers); then for a year and a half I worked at the national budget section, lately as deputy chief, where my work was more in the organising and coordinating field than in pure research work. For the last few months I worked on general and monetary problems of the general plan division.
Since 1949 I have been a member of the Econometric Society. In September 1950 I attended an international conference on input-output-analysis, where I delivered and defended a paper on "Recent Experiences with Input-Output-analysis in The Netherlands".
I have sufficient knowledge of the English language to write and to speak it without much difficulty. I can also read French easily and can make myself understood. Up to now I have no knowledge of the Portuguese language, but I shall try to learn it as soon as possible.
Professor Derksen told me, that he could give no exact information about the salary, which in his opinion would be very satisfactory. Of course I should like to have some more information on this point and on the general prospects of the position offered. Would it be possible to have the passage paid? I assume that you can see to my accomodation. I am a bachelor. Naturally I shall be very grateful for your help.
As a Netherlands citizen I have to ask the Queens permission to be appointed in a foreign semi-official position. There are some more exit-formalities and I shall have to hand over my position at the Central Planning Bureau, so that it will take a few months after your reply has come in before I shall be able to leave for Brazil.
I hope you will be able to offer me a suitable appointment and that it will be possible for me to contribute to your research program to the best of my ability.
