Dear Professor Kennan,
I read your lectures on "Realities of American Foreign Policy" with the greatest interest, and not only admired the style but also, and especially, the logic and the equilibrated approach. I am certain I learned much from it. You will understand that I had some special interest for your remarks concerning economic questions in particular, and was struck by your recommendations at the end of the fourth lecture.
As far as a freer trade is concerned I feel complete agreement; your immigration paragraph seems to me to be particularly generous although certainly and in the long run legitimate. I am less certain whether I would agree with your opinion about what is now usually called "aid to under-developed countries". My tendency is to have a fairly different look on this matter, and having a chance to visit the United States several times this year I wonder whether it would be possible to have a discussion on this subject with you personally. In order to prepare the discussion I am sending you a copy of my little book "International Economic Integration", in which you will find a very brief indication of my views. Your comments on this book would be most welcome to me anyhow if you could find the opportunity to do so. I wonder whether you would kindly let me know whether there is a chance to meet you some time in June when I shall be for a longer time in Washington, and could easily come to Princeton.
