Beste Tjalling,
Tot mijn genoegen kan ik je berichten dat je door de Raad van Beheer van de Nederlandse Economische Hogeschool wordt uitgenodigd om ter gelegenheid van je verblijf in West-Europa dit najaar ongeveer 7 colleges te geven, voor elk waarvan je een honorarium van f 100.- zal worden uitgekeerd. De Rector is van mening dat we dit kunnen interpreteren als een mogelijkheid om bv. een korte cursus van 8 colleges te geven, waarin je de hoofdzaken van kwesties, zoals identificeerbaarheid en schatting van de statistische parameters van ons stelsel zou kunnen uiteenzetten voor een betrekkelijk kleine groep van specialisten. Deze specialisten zullen niet zoveel matrices kunnen verdragen als je studenten in Chicago, echter wel enige. Het zou naar mijn gevoel bijzonder pleizierig zijn, wanneer je de voorbeelden in je colleges in Chicago opgenomen ten volle behandelde, aldus de aard van de vraagstukken duidelijk makende en dan voor de fijnproevers iets over de algemene formulering van het vraagstuk telkens zou willen toevoegen.
De econometristen verheugen zich er bijzonder op dat je komt en ik ben er bij voorbaat zeker van dat men ook graag je nog eens uitnodigt voor één of twee lezingen aan het Planbureau, hetzij over enkele finesses over hetzelfde onderwerp, hetzij over enkele onderdelen van de toepassing van lineaire productiefuncties.
Het is misschien nuttig dat ik je mededeel, dat bij Leontief plannen zijn gerijpt (die door de Rockefeller Foundation zijn aanvaard en organisatorisch in handen van het Nederlands Economisch Instituut zijn gelegd) om in September in Rotterdam een conferentie te houden over "input-output"-vraagstukken. Mocht je je programma zo kunnen inrichten, dat je daarbij kunt zijn, dan zal dat ongetwijfeld de conferentie ook zeer ten goede komen.
Aangaande de huisvesting blijven wij ons best doen. Zoals ik je al schreef is het zeer de vraag of het lukt bij de rigoreuze maatregelen die dienaangaande gelden. De oplossing zou dan moeten zijn in een pension te gaan, hetgeen ondertussen knapjes duur is. Maar zowel Polak als ik kijken goed uit.

Dear Tjalling,
To my pleasure, I can inform you that you are invited by the Board of Management of the Netherlands School of Economics to give approximately 7 lectures on the occasion of your stay in Western Europe this autumn, for each of which you will be paid an honorarium of f 100.-. The Rector is of the opinion that we can interpret this as a possibility to give, for example, a short course of 8 lectures, in which you could explain the main points of issues, such as identifiability and estimation of the statistical parameters of our system, for a relatively small group of specialists. These specialists will not be able to tolerate as many matrices as your students in Chicago, but some nonetheless. It would, in my feeling, be particularly pleasant if you fully treated the examples included in your lectures in Chicago, thus making the nature of the issues clear and then adding something about the general formulation of the issue for the connoisseurs each time.
The econometricians are particularly looking forward to your coming and I am certain in advance that people would also like to invite you once more for one or two lectures at the Planning Bureau, either about some finesses on the same subject, or about some parts of the application of linear production functions.
It might be useful for me to inform you that plans have matured at Leontief (which have been accepted by the Rockefeller Foundation and placed organizationally in the hands of the Netherlands Economic Institute) to hold a conference in Rotterdam in September on "input-output" issues. Should you be able to arrange your program such that you can be there, then that will undoubtedly also benefit the conference greatly.
Regarding housing, we continue to do our best. As I already wrote to you, it is very much the question whether it will succeed given the rigorous measures that apply in that regard. The solution would then have to be to go to a boarding house, which in the meantime is quite expensive. But both Polak and I are keeping a good lookout.
