Zeer geachte Heer Vogelaar,
Uw brief van 7 April werd mij door de heer de Wit ter beantwoording toegezonden en bereikte mij heden. De door U geciteerde uitspraak klopt ongeveer met een deel van een betoog, dat ik heb gegeven in mijn boekje Redelijke Inkomensverdeling. Ten einde de uitspraak niet mis te verstaan is het echter goed haar in het verband van het daar gegeven betoog te plaatsen. Zeer in het kort komt het op het volgende neer. Onder de huidige omstandigheden zal de inkomensverdeling niet uitsluitend kunnen worden gebaseerd op rechtvaardigheidsoverwegingen (zoals ik die versta), doch mede op overwegingen van productiviteit. Het compromis tussen deze beide beginselen wordt door mij met het woord redelijke inkomensverdeling aangegeven. De betreffende uitspraak maakt onderdeel uit van een poging om het begrip rechtvaardig nader te definiëren. Daarbij wordt (en dit laatste meer in het bijzonder in een nader uitgewerkt stuk, dat in genoemd boekje nog niet zo duidelijk is te vinden) allereerst het geval beschouwd, waarin alle mensen identiek zouden zijn; voor dat geval geldt de door U geciteerde uitspraak m. i. Complicaties rijzen doordat zij niet identiek zijn; over deze complicaties wordt zowel in mijn boekje alsook in bedoeld nader stuk verder uitgeweid. Ik heb het genoegen U het nadere stuk toe te zenden, echter gaarne onder het beding, dat dit nog niet voor citeren in het publiek bedoeld is; ik zond het nog slechts aan enkele belangstellenden voor critiek toe. Mocht U eventueel ook critiek willen formuleren, dan zou ik dit zeer op prijs stellen.

Dear Mr. Vogelaar,
Your letter of April 7 was sent to me by Mr. de Wit for a response and reached me today. The statement quoted by you roughly corresponds to a part of an argument that I gave in my booklet Reasonable Income Distribution. In order not to misunderstand the statement, however, it is good to place it in the context of the argument given there. Very briefly, it comes down to the following. Under current circumstances, income distribution cannot be based exclusively on considerations of justice (as I understand them), but also on considerations of productivity. The compromise between these two principles is indicated by me with the term reasonable income distribution. The statement in question is part of an attempt to further define the concept of justice. In doing so (and the latter more particularly in a more detailed piece, which is not yet so clearly found in the aforementioned booklet), the case is first considered in which all people would be identical; for that case, the statement quoted by you applies in my opinion. Complications arise because they are not identical; these complications are further elaborated upon both in my booklet and in the intended more detailed piece. I have the pleasure of sending you the more detailed piece, but gladly under the condition that this is not yet intended for public citation; I have only sent it to a few interested parties for criticism. Should you eventually also wish to formulate criticism, I would greatly appreciate it.
