Amice,
Het is mij tot mijn spijt onmogelijk de vergadering van de Senaat bij te wonen. Wel hoop ik Zaterdag bij de gemeenschappelijke bespreking met de Curatoren aanwezig te zijn.
Uit een aantal gedetailleerde vragen van collega Sneller meen ik de conclusie te mogen trekken dat hij nu toch ernst maakt met het voordragen van Goudswaard tot hoogleraar. Tevens hoorde ik van Idenburg dat het er nu wel zeer veel op lijkt dat Derksen niet zal terugkomen. Binnen drie weken is deze zaak beslist. Mocht het inderdaad zo liggen dan kunnen wij Goudswaard bij ons houden, indien wij hem dit aanbod eveneens doen. Ik zou het op prijs stellen wanneer deze kwestie als ingekomen mededeling in de Senaatsvergadering nog even kon worden bekend gemaakt.
Tenslotte zou ik het op prijs stellen als in de thans eerstvolgende Senaatsvergadering een beslissing zou kunnen worden genomen over de vraag of de statistische analyse en de econometrie (dit laatste inclusief wiskundige economie) als twee vakken kunnen worden beschouwd. In mijn notitie over deze zaak in de Senaat heb ik van mijn onwetendheid betreffende de juridische zijde van een zodanige beslissing getuigd. Is het mogelijk dat wij inmiddels de voorlichting van een ter zake deskundige krijgen? Ik verontschuldig mij voor deze overlast, maar neem aan dat Rector en Secretaris deze kennis paraat bezitten. Mocht het inderdaad niet mogelijk zijn deze vakken als twee vakken te beschouwen, dan zin ik op andere middelen tot verlichting van de inderdaad wel zware examentaak der studenten, die het vak statistische analyse en econometrie hebben gekozen. Ik denk aan de mogelijkheid dat men naar keuze tentamen kan doen bij de heer Goudswaard of bij mij. Daarover hoor ik bij gelegenheid gaarne eens mondeling je oordeel. Met hartelijke groeten,

To my regret, it is impossible for me to attend the meeting of the Senate. I do hope to be present on Saturday at the joint discussion with the Curators.
From a number of detailed questions from colleague Sneller, I believe I can draw the conclusion that he is now serious about nominating Goudswaard for professor. I also heard from Idenburg that it now seems very likely that Derksen will not return. Within three weeks, this matter will be decided. Should that indeed be the case, we can keep Goudswaard with us if we also make him this offer. I would appreciate it if this matter could be announced as an incoming communication in the Senate meeting.
Finally, I would appreciate it if a decision could be made in the next Senate meeting on the question of whether statistical analysis and econometrics (the latter including mathematical economics) can be considered as two subjects. In my note on this matter in the Senate, I testified to my ignorance regarding the legal side of such a decision. Is it possible that we could in the meantime receive information from an expert in the field? I apologize for this inconvenience, but assume that the Rector and Secretary have this knowledge at hand. Should it indeed not be possible to consider these subjects as two subjects, then I am considering other means to lighten the indeed heavy examination task of the students who have chosen the subject of statistical analysis and econometrics. I am thinking of the possibility that one can choose to take the exam with Mr. Goudswaard or with me. I would like to hear your opinion on this orally at some point. With cordial greetings,
