Zeer geachte Heer Loeb,
Voor Uw brief van 12 December dank ik U ten zeerste. Het is altijd de moeite waard om door een ooggetuige en "bevriende relatie" te worden ingelicht. Onze kranten zijn over het leven in Brazilië niet erg uitvoerig. Het deed me uiteraard genoegen, dat U, ondanks alle voor U zeer interessante belevenissen, het werk op het C.P.B. toch nog niet vergeten bent. Aan de andere kant ben ik ook blij, dat het Uw vrouw en U blijkbaar toch goed bevalt.
De werkzaamheden voor 1953 waren hier zo ongeveer voltooid, waarbij wij er sterk op hadden aangedrongen, met succes, dat de overheidsuitgaven zouden worden verhoogd, toen op 1 Februari de overstroming kwam, die een veel groter programma zal nodig maken dan waarvan wij gedroomd hadden. Naast alle menselijke ellende, die ons de eerste weken heeft bezig gehouden, zijn het thans uiteraard de economische gevolgen, die de aandacht vragen en die, zoals U wel zult begrijpen, weer stof tot nota's geven. Inmiddels gaat ook de verbetering van onze methode van werken steeds voort en m.n. in de financiële sector hebben wij behoorlijke successen te boeken. Ik neem aan dat U van Uw oude collega's van tijd tot tijd wel stukken toegestuurd krijgt.

Dear Mr. Loeb,
Thank you very much for your letter of December 12. It is always worthwhile to be informed by an eyewitness and "friendly relation". Our newspapers are not very detailed about life in Brazil. It naturally gave me pleasure that, despite all the very interesting experiences for you, you have not yet forgotten the work at the C.P.B. On the other hand, I am also glad that you and your wife apparently like it there.
The work for 1953 was more or less completed here, in which we had strongly urged, successfully, that government spending should be increased, when on February 1 the flood occurred, which will necessitate a much larger program than we had dreamed of. Besides all the human misery that has kept us busy for the first few weeks, it is now naturally the economic consequences that demand attention and which, as you will understand, again provide material for memos. Meanwhile, the improvement of our method of working also continues and especially in the financial sector we have achieved considerable success. I assume that you receive documents from your old colleagues from time to time.
