Beste Dick,
In antwoord op je brief van 10 Augustus meld ik je nog even dat we met de Rijndam varen. In Philadelphia wacht me niemand op; wij kunnen de sleutel van ons appartement gewoon bij de benedenburen in ontvangst nemen. Je aanbod ten deze is dus niet nodig, maar wordt evenzeer gewaardeerd. Uiteraard heb ik er mee gerekend dat we als het schip laat aankomt in New York zullen moeten overnachten. Het hotel waar ik vroeger eens was en wat ik heel geschikt vond is in de 53e straat en heet meen ik het Henry Hudson hotel.
Ik weet dat je de terugkeer naar Nederland niet zo erg pleizierig vindt; en zeker voor een deel met reden. Aan de andere kant kan je misschien toch stellen dat er in Nederland op menig punt "proeffabrieken draaien", die de buitenlandse belangstelling trekken, waardoor wij toch niet te klagen hebben over internationale aanloop en er zijn toch ook altijd wel enkele aspecten van het leven hier, die naar mijn mening volkomen gunstig afsteken bij wat er elders gebeurt. Maar daarover discussiëren wij dan nog wel eens !

Dear Dick,
In response to your letter of August 10, I would like to inform you that we are sailing with the Rijndam. No one is waiting for me in Philadelphia; we can simply receive the key to our apartment from the downstairs neighbors. Your offer in this regard is therefore not necessary, but is equally appreciated. Naturally, I have taken into account that if the ship arrives late in New York, we will have to stay overnight. The hotel where I stayed once before and which I found very suitable is on 53rd Street and I believe it is called the Henry Hudson hotel.
I know that you do not find the return to the Netherlands very pleasant; and certainly for a part with reason. On the other hand, you might still say that in the Netherlands "pilot plants are running" on many points, which attract foreign interest, so that we have no reason to complain about international visitors and there are always some aspects of life here that, in my opinion, contrast perfectly favorably with what happens elsewhere. But we will discuss that some other time!
