Zeer geachte Heer Roelofs,
Het lijkt mij zeker niet uitgesloten dat U bij verdere sollicitaties een keer succes zult hebben, zodat ik U zou aanraden daarmee nog wat door te gaan. Bijna niemand slaagt onmiddellijk en de moeilijkheid is natuurlijk dat U zich enigszins zult moeten aanpassen aan de practische zijde van het werk, die U uiteraard niet uit eigen ervaring kent. Tot nu toe hebt U wel in zuiver wetenschappelijke sfeer geleefd wat Uw economische werk aangaat, en U zult later bemerken dat in de meeste practische betrekkingen dat werk maar een onderdeel is van wat men gewoonlijk van de mensen verwacht.
Ik heb Uw artikel ontvangen en zal het natuurlijk lezen, maar ik ben erg bezet op het ogenblik en zal dus wel enige clementie van U moeten inroepen wat de termijn betreft.
Het tegenwoordige adres van Prof. Goudriaan is: Hotel Irene, Pretoria, Zuid Afrika. De heer Goudriaan heeft slechts tijdelijk als voorzitter van een commissie van deskundigen op het Secretariaat van de U.N. gewerkt in de afgelopen herfst. Hij is nu weer terug naar zijn universiteit.

Dear Mr. Roelofs,
It seems to me certainly not excluded that you will have success at some point with further applications, so I would advise you to continue with them for a while. Almost no one succeeds immediately and the difficulty is, of course, that you will have to adapt somewhat to the practical side of the work, which you naturally do not know from your own experience. Until now, you have lived in a purely scientific atmosphere as far as your economic work is concerned, and you will later notice that in most practical positions that work is only one part of what is usually expected of people.
I have received your article and will of course read it, but I am very busy at the moment and will therefore have to invoke some leniency from you regarding the deadline.
The current address of Prof. Goudriaan is: Hotel Irene, Pretoria, South Africa. Mr. Goudriaan only worked temporarily as chairman of a committee of experts at the Secretariat of the U.N. last autumn. He is now back at his university.
