Professor J. E. MEADE,
London School of Economics,
Houghton Street, Aldwych,
London W.C. 2
With reference to your letter of April 27, 1955, to professor TINBERGEN I herewith send you part of the information you asked for. It is a matter of regret to me that it was not possible to send this reply sooner.
Detailed and comparable balance of payments figures are available for the period 1948-1954 only. A classification of these figures by geographical areas is lacking. Instead you will find a classification by currencies.
In table I the foreign payments as recorded by The Netherlands Bank have been specified as follows:
i) all currencies
ii) U.S. dollars
iii) total E.P.U. currencies
iv) other currencies.
A more detailed classification by E.P.U. currencies cannot be given as Dr HOUWINK of The Netherlands Bank informed me that the Bank does not want to give this information.
Figures for the years 1946 and 1947 have been published in Volume 5 of the Balance of payments yearbook issued by the International Monetary Fund. These figures have been prepared in accordance with the Fund's "Balance of payments manual" and cannot be compared with the figures given in table I.

Index numbers on the volume of Dutch and Belgian imports and exports of manufactured products are given in table II. In case you are interested in an overall index of the Dutch imports of capital goods and consumer goods the weights for these groups given there may be of use to you. These weights are not available for Belgium.
If any further information is required, please let me know.
Sincerely yours,
(W. Drees Jr)
