Dear Sir/Madam,
Recently I learned, that Professor Elisabeth Mann Borgese has been nominated for your Royal Bank Prize by the President of Dalhousie University and the Director of the Pearson Institute. With this letter I most strongly support this nomination.
I first met with Elisabeth Mann Borgese in November 1974. At the time I acted - upon the initiative of Dr. Aurelio Peccei, then President of The Club of Rome - as Co-ordinator of the project Reshaping the International Order (RIO).
One of 10 subject areas addressed by the RIO Group - consisting of 21 specialists drawn from a variety of countries, social systems and specializations - was Ocean Management. This subject area was taken care of by Elisabeth Mann Borgese and Arvid Pardo.
Through the work of the RIO Group - which resulted in October 1976 in the RIO Report, published in 11 languages and some 250,000 copies - I came to know Elisabeth Mann Borgese as an unremitting fighter for the oceans as the 'common heritage of mankind'.
At the time she was still based in Santa Barbara, but in 1978 she moved to Dalhousie University - I am proud to have played a role in bringing about that move - and some years later she became a Canadian citizen. But ever since 1974 we kept in close contact.
As the driving force behind the International Ocean Institute, she contributed as from 1967 to preparing and implementing the Law of the Sea Convention. The recent Pacem in Maribus XVIII Conference & Trade Show in Rotterdam proved to be a remarkable case in point.
I could not think of a Canadian citizen more deserving of the description "whose outstanding accomplishment makes an important contribution to human welfare and the common good". Hence my strongest support to her nomination for your Royal Bank Prize.
