Dear Mr. President,
First of all I would like to state that I am very honoured with your proposal for a
meeting during your forthcoming visit to the Netherlands.
The organization of the International Green Cross, together with the Dutch
Government, has scheduled this visit to my house for Tuesday May 25th. at 9.15
in the morning.
Present will be, on my side, three more Boardmembers including our Vice
Chairman Dr. Simon van der Meer, and the executive director of our foundation,
mr. Theo Knippenberg, who you have previously met in 1985 and again in July
of last year.
As for your expressed interest to discuss further cooperation between our
foundation and the International Green Cross, we await your reaction to the
proposal that we have submitted to you through mr. Ronald Wiederkehr.
As we stated we, and the other participating and supporting Nobel Laureates,
will gladly assist in setting up such an International Green Cross Academy, with
the specific tasks of value-change and global education on the environmental
issues.
Yet our foundation is also strongly involved with another major issue that is also
threatening the future of many children worldwide, the problem of child labour.
Child labour is perhaps the most widespread form of child abuse, forcing
between 100 and 200 million children worldwide to work under often hazardous
conditions, robbing them of their childhood and of any chance for an education
which could open up a better future for them.
In close cooperation with the ILO, UNICEF, UNESCO and the WHO, with the
international Business Community as well as with Labour Unions, and with many
other organizations, we have involved ourselves in a campaign against child
labour.
Your support, and the support of mrs. Raisa Gorbachev, perhaps expressed in a
short statement of support to our efforts to stop child labour, would be of
tremendous value for this cause.
