PROFESSOR DR J. TINBERGEN
DEN HAAG, 15 Februari 1950
Sijzenlaan ^1
Miss Lynn Hoffman,
Selection *^ëcretary,
Salzburg Seninar in American Studies,
Schloss Leopoldskron,
Salzburgy
Austria.
Dear Miss Hoffman,
I got your letter of 8 February as well as a
letter of miss Butler of 7 February of almost the same contents,
Since your letter is speaking about Economic Planning as the
possible subject, this narrower subject seens to correspond
more closely to my special field. I take it that mids Butlers'
intention was identical to yours and I take the liberty to
answer both letters at the same time.
May I suggest the following special problems
wthin the field of ICcononic Planning for treatment in a
Salzburg Seminar ?
(i)
It vv'ould be highly interesting for European students
to be informed about the type of employment policy which
is in the minds of Professor J.M.Clark and Professor
Arthur Sraithees. May be that one of them or one of their
colleagues would be willing to expose their ideas. I am
thinking particularly of the ideas set forth in the
recent United Nations Publication (Sales No: 19^9.II.A.2)
of July 19^9;"Maintenance of Full Employment".
(ii)
As a second topic v/ithin the field of Economic Planning
an outline of the work done in the united States Separtment of Agriculture on forecasting of agricultural prices
and acreages would be highly interesting. One of the
main experts who has worked in this field is Professor
Louis Bean; there v/ill also be experts of the Department
of Agriculture v/ho may be able and willing to deal with
this matter.
(iii) As a third subject I suggest the well-known question
of the Tennessee Valey authority. You will no doubt yourself be able to answer who would be the most qualified
expert for dealing with this interesting project.
I do think that each one of these subjects would be very
useful for EuropeHM students.
Yours very sincerely,
