Professor Harry Johnson,

Zomerzorgerlaan 2,
Bloemendaal.
Dear Professor Johnson,
I am V7riting to you as the chairman of the F. de Vries Foundation,
created to honour the memory of the late Professor F. de Vries, a leading
economist for decades in the Netherlands. Periodically the Foundation
organizes the "F. de Vries lectures" for an audience interested in economic
science at the academic level. 'The text of the lecture is published in the
form of a small book. The Board of the Foundation has the honour to invite
you to give these lectures in 1971, preferably during the last week of
September, in one of the premises of the University of Amsterdam. It is
customary for our guest lecturers to lecture three times, on two successive
days. Each lecture could last from 45 to 60 minutes or so. The Foundation
offers you a honorarium of Dfls. 2000.- and takes care of your travel as
vfell as your hotel costs. The subject the Board has in mind is monetary
policy with regard to inflation - against the background of the controversy
between monetarists and non-monetarists; dealing with the question of whether
inflation can be controlled at all, but the precise contents anü title can
be chosen by yourself. It will be appreciated if upon leaving you can make
the text available in order that publication be not unduly delayed.
Hoping that you find it possible to accept, I am.
Yours sincerely,
(j. Tinbergen)
