REVIEW OF ECONOivICS AND
STATISTICS

Dear Dr Harris,
I am very glad to give you some particulars
about Dr Verdoorn and his book.
Dr Verdoorn studied economics at the
university of Amsterdam and took his doctor degree in
Rotterdamj I acted as his promotor. His thesis consisted
in a statistical analysis of the phenomenon of fixed
co^ts. He showed that there is no evidence to believe
that since I87O the ratio between fixed and variable costs
changed very much, and he tried to make it understandable
tn ï/hich,.X think, he succeeded. Dr Verdoorn is now chief
of the research section of the Central Planning Office
for the Dutch Government.
His book on market analyses is in my
opinion a very good one. In fact he succeedefl in giving a
very clear treatment of the statistical and econometric
methods used in market analyses in a rather simple form
and with a large number of applications on concrete cases.
The book therefore at the same tim.e represents a compendium
of practical work that has be-nn done in this field. I
warmly recommend the book for translation.
Yours very sincerely.
