Dear Professor Mahalanobis,
Prom your letter of January 2?
I \inderstood that I might hear from you later about
my possible stay in India, As you will remember I
had written to you before that I am available between
October 1 and April 1, though preferably for a shorter
period. After April 1 I have other duties to take up.
It would take me some time
to prepare a possible visit because of the numerous
tasks I have in my own country. Before taMng a final
decision I should like to liave some more details as
to task, payment (Including travelling costs of my
family ?), residence etc. There are also a few
questions as e,g, the one v/hether I shall be permitted
to accept invitations from neighbouring iiniversities
to give incidental lectiires, I had hoped to discuss
these points with you during a visit of yours to
Heiland which was announced to me by my friend
Goudswaard, In view of the short time which separates
us from October 1,1 hope you v/ill excuse me for
writing to you in order to know whether you expect
me to come this year. It goee without saying that
knowing all about possible obstacles that may present
themselves in official matters, I can easily imagine
that there is no possibility for you to answer me
in the near future. It is only to be sure that no
misunderstanding or omission on my part is in play,
I had the pleasure of discussing with Dr Mukerji some of the problems raised
in your letter of December 30, 1953 and rv'our wellknown article of 1953 on developnent. Probably I
shall be able to write to you in the next few days
on this point.
