Dear Dr Mahalanohis,
In reply to your letter of April 21 and
after having consulted the Secretary-General of the Ministry
df Economic Affairs I am able to let you 3mow that in
principle I shall he glad to consider any more definite
proposal you would care to make to me ahout a possihle
stay of some 9 months in India starting, say, in October
or November 195U. Indeed it will he a real pleasure for
me to oooperate in some way in researdti hearing upon the
economic developnent of your country and my previous
contacts in particular with your institute and with the
Central Planning Commission have shovm me what important
work is in this reineet going on. My v/ife ^^lll certainly
be glad to join me as you suggest.

Tinbergen,
«

I thank Mrs. Tinbergen and you for your kind
hospitality and the stimulating and instructive discussions I
had with you at the Hague on April 17th and 13th.
I am eager that you should come to India for a period
of about a year so as to help us in econometric studies on
national income and related statistics with special reference
to investment and economic planning. It may be possible to
arrange such a visit on an assignment sponsored by the United
Nations Technical Assistance Administration or directly by
India on such terms as would be acceptable to you. As regards
the geographical or institutional location, the details can
also be settled in due course to suit your convenience. At
this stage, I am making a general enquiry on my own initiative
to know your ov/n views in the matter, and also, I hope, to
have some idea about possible dates. In case some working
arrangements can be provisionnally settled by informal discussions at the personal level, I am confident it would be
possible to initiate appropriate action at the official level.
May I add that it is our earnest hope and desire that
it will be possible for Mrs . Tinbergen to come v/ith you to
India ?
